New York — Another veteran pitcher has been added to the Yankees roster. According to the team’s transaction page, Chi Chi Gonzalez has signed a minor league deal with the New York franchise. The Yankees recently added Anthony Banda and re-signed Chasen Shreve.

Right-hander González has pitched for three teams this season. The 30-year-old started with the Twins before joining the Brewers. Both teams assigned him active roles. Gonzalez recently triggered an opt-out clause in his contract with the Tigers.

Gonzalez played six games for Minnesota and Milwaukee this season. In 18.1 innings, he allowed 14 runs and five homers for a 6.87 ERA. His minor league ERA was 4.19 over 58 innings.

Born in Florida, Gonzalez has struggled in the majors. In 2015, he had a 3.90 ERA in 14 games for Texas, but it jumped to 8.71 in 2016. Gonzalez didn’t pitch again for the Rockies until 2019. From 2019-2021, he pitched 44 games for Colorado with a 6.10 ERA.

After 280 innings pitched in his career, the righty has a career ERA of 5.72.

Gonzalez has no major league achievement, but the Yankees could use him as a minor league pitcher. He is good at starting and relieving, an area where the Yankees lack depth and are exposed due to their weakness.

However, it is likely that Gonzalez has to wait for his pinstripe debut until the Yankees are forced to offload a few more to the injured list.

Do you think that the Yankees are right to sign Gonzalez? Will the veteran pitcher be an asset or a liability? When you can expect him to pitch? Is he capable enough to suit up in pinstripe? Leave your comment for the Yankees and their fans.
