Clarke Schmidt failed the Yankees once again on Friday, this time allowing five runs on ten hits in five innings of work. The right-handed pitcher got into difficulty in every inning, but he only allowed three runs with two outs in the third and two in the second. His 6.84 ERA, which jumped after 5-2 Yankees loss in Texas, is a bad mark for him.
“There’s a lot of good I took out of it, but there’s a lot of things that I’ll need to continue to work on,” Schmidt said. “Obviously, I take full responsibility of it, and just continuing to learn from each outing and get better each time.”
After going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, Franchy Cordero was sent to Triple-A, extending his hitless streak to 21 games. On Friday, the Yankees called up first baseman/outfielder Jake Bauers from Triple-A to take his spot. With Cordero gone, the Yankees may decide not to put Judge on the disabled list.
For the second time on his 22nd birthday, Anthony Volpe did not start, but he did come in for Cordero and fly out to left to close the game. The rookie has lifted his batting average from .180 to .229 with a .294 batting average in his last 10 games.
Clarke Schmidt burns Yankees
New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt took the loss in game two of the series against the Texas Rangers after allowing five runs on ten hits over five innings. This was Schmidt’s third defeat of the season. He has not recorded a victory on the season and whose earned run average (ERA) had risen to an alarming 6.84. The Rangers’ Robbie Grossman was all over him. He drove in two runs and scored another with a home run and two doubles in the third inning at Globe Life Field.
Although pitching for the Yankees as a rookie is never easy, Clarke Schmidt deserves some credit for striking out eight batters despite allowing five runs. He also acknowledged that he has room for improvement, saying:
“There’s a lot of good I took out of it, but there’s a lot of things that I’ll need to continue to work on,” Schmidt said after the game. “Obviously, I take full responsibility of it, and just continuing to learn from each outing and get better each time.”
The Yankees are already understaffed, and their 15-12 record this season has dropped them to fourth place in the American League East.
A look at Yankees alternatives to Clarke Schmidt
Greg Weissert
2023 | Regular Season (all levels) | 0-0 | 1.17 ERA | .593 actual wins | .000 actual losses (1.000 win pct.)
2023 | Regular Season with New York Yankees (NYY) | 0-0 | 0.00 ERA | .111 actual wins | .000 actual losses (1.000 win pct.) (before Monday’s game) | 0-0, 2.08 ERA (after Monday’s game)
2023 | Regular Season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (SWB) | 0-0 | 1.69 ERA | .481 actual wins | .000 actual losses (1.000 win pct.) |
Weissert will not be demoted to Triple-A at this time. He has excelled in both the majors and Triple-A so far. The only reason he’s pitching for the Yankees right now is because other starters have been hurt or struggling.
The 28-year-old player debuted in the Major League on August 25, 2022. He debuted in the Minors in 2016, and he won’t play there in 2020, so you can bet the Yankees will keep a tight eye on him this year.
Since he was demoted to Triple-A Scranton on March 29, it’s safe to assume that he isn’t in the Yankees’ plans for the rest of the regular season or the postseason. In terms of regular season victories, he is tied for eighth place at Scranton. His winning percentage in playoff games (1.000) is higher than his winning percentage in regular season games (.855) at either Scranton or New York.
Aaron McGarity
2023 | Regular Season with SWB | 2-0 | 1.74 ERA | .481 actual wins | .179 actual losses (.728 win pct.) |
McGarity has yet to make it to the major leagues. Since 2017, he has been playing in the Minor Leagues, however, he miss the 2020 and 2021 seasons. His earned run average (ERA) in the Minors has never been higher than 2.50. He’s only pitched in 75 Minor League games so far, but his ERA is already at 1.89.
Except for 2019, when he appeared in 35 games in the Minors, he has never played in more than 14. Before he can be called up to the majors, he has to remain in shape and play more games in the Minor Leagues.
The Yankees will have to promote McGarity to the big leagues if he continues pitching so effectively. He was sent to Scranton on April 4th. The month of September may see his recall. The Yankees should not hurry him into the majors until he is fully prepared to do so. He may be very close to making it to the majors, but only the Yankees and McGarity know for sure.
In all likelihood, McGarity will not be promoted to the Major Leagues this season, particularly if he suffers another lengthy injury. Since he has only appeared in a handful of Minor League games to this point, McGarity may make his MLB debut this season, but he will need to prove that he can stay fit and play in a lot of games at Triple-A before he is given such a great chance.
In terms of regular season victories, he is tied for sixth place at Scranton. His overall regular season performance (.779) exceeded his victory percentage (.728).
Deivi Garcia
2023 | Regular Season with SWB | 1-0 | 1.93 ERA | .429 actual wins | .343 actual losses (.556 win pct.) |
The Yankees are taking their time bringing him back to the majors. Being a starter turned out to be detrimental for him at the Major League level. It would seem that Garcia is making the transition from starting to relieving and that this is working out quite well for him.
The Yankees may use him or keep him in mind for the postseason run in September and October. He won’t be brought up unless some other players get injured. He debuted in the Majors on August 30, 2020, at the age of 21 after spending time in Triple-A since March 14.
His overall regular season performance (.755) exceeded his victory percentage (.556). For the entire season (including Spring Training), Garcia has the tenth-most real losses in the Yankees organization across Triple-A and MLB.
Nick Ramirez
2023 | Regular Season with SWB | 0-0 | 1.74 ERA | .698 actual wins | .000 actual losses (1.000 win pct.) |
If other pitchers become hurt or can’t participate later in the season or in the playoffs, Ramirez might play a significant role. Since joining the Major Leagues in 2019, he has pitched 110 2/3 innings in 64 games for Detroit and San Diego. In 2021, he played his last game in the MLB. So, he is aware of the necessary steps.
For at least the next few years, if not more, Ramirez will be a household name, I just “feel” it. (I’ll admit that I altered the last line after learning that he would make his season debut with the New York Yankees today. My previous draft included the phrase, “He’ll be around for a while,” and I’ve been debating all day whether or not to preserve it.)
Ramirez may be traded to a National League team if the Yankees’ other relievers are healthy and more capable than he is. The 33-year-old may or may not be on the Yankees’ playoff roster, and he may or may not play baseball for much longer (if he quits at 37 or anything like that).
In terms of actual regular-season wins, he ranks fifth at Scranton. His regular season success rate (.750) was higher than his winning % (1.000) since it was unaffected by whether or not he won or lost games.
Michael King
2023 | Regular Season with NYY | 0-1 | 2.03 ERA | .974 actual wins | .798 actual losses (.550 win pct.) |
In 2019, he spent a lot of time in the Minors, the last time this occurred. (He was also a minor in the year 2021). After the 2020 season, his ERA has improved in every healthy season of his Major League career.
King is a more effective pitcher than Domingo German during the regular season. King’s .550 regular-season average is higher than his .506 average in any game, win or lose. During the regular season, he is the ninth-best starter for the Yankees.
Although his True ERA of 3.38 is lower than that of Domingo German’s, King deserves more of the blame for allowing baserunners to score. When it comes to the Yankees’ genuine record, King is fourth, behind Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt.
King will remain in the Majors for the time being due to his high importance and the fact that he has thrown at least 1 1/3 innings in each of his seven outings this season. Even though runs and earned runs try to make him look better by saying that he has only given up a run or runs in two games during the regular season, he has allowed baserunners to score in five of seven games.
For the entire Yankees organization, including Triple-A and MLB (including Spring Training), King ranks eighth in real wins.
Yankees fans wants an end to Clarke Schmidt experiment
Schmidt induced eight strikeouts against the Texas Rangers, but his effectiveness has been questioned due to his ineffectiveness against left-handed hitters. Many New York Yankees fans took to Twitter to express their displeasure that Schmidt was not starting in his rookie season.
