NEW YORK — With the MLB trade deadline looming, the New York Yankees appear poised for a bold move to reinforce their roster on multiple fronts. Sources signal the club is deep in discussions for a potential multiplayer package deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks that could deliver both a power bat and a much-needed rotation arm.
According to league insiders, the Yankees are pursuing Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez and right-hander Zac Gallen, in a significant trade that could reshape the second half of their season.
Yankees targeting immediate impact
New York has identified Suarez, 33, as a top priority. The veteran slugger is slashing .250/.320/.569 with 31 home runs and 78 RBIs through mid-July. His right-handed power and ability to solidify the hot corner make him a strong fit for a Yankees lineup that has struggled at third base.
“Suárez is an excellent first step,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote recently. “His expiring contract allows the Yankees flexibility while addressing a glaring hole.”
Third base production has been a weak link for New York, especially after DJ LeMahieu’s struggles and subsequent DFA earlier this month. Suarez’s bat would immediately lengthen the lineup and provide protection for stars like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Meanwhile, Gallen, 29, remains a name of interest despite a down year. The right-hander owns a 5.40 ERA but has shown signs of rebounding, including a pair of strong outings this month. In 2024, he posted a 3.22 ERA and earned All-Star honors, reinforcing his potential to anchor a rotation.
“We’re going to be fully engaged and see where it takes us,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said this week. “Hopefully, we can run into some opportunities that can benefit us.”
If Arizona opts to retain Gallen, New York could pivot to Merrill Kelly, who has posted a 3.34 ERA over 116 innings this season. His veteran presence and postseason experience would be a stabilizing addition.
What the Yankees would give
To land both Suarez and either Gallen or Kelly, the Yankees are prepared to part with a sizeable package of young talent. Industry sources suggest the offer may include three of the following.
- Spencer Jones, towering outfield slugger viewed as one of the Yankees’ top farm assets
- Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz, a right-handed pitching prospect with rising stock
- Everson Pereira, outfield prospect with raw power, or
- Oswald Peraza, versatile infielder with MLB experience
The inclusion of both Pereira and Jones signals how seriously New York views this trade. Jones, in particular, has drawn comparisons to Aaron Judge due to his 6-foot-6 frame and power profile.
Arizona’s motivations
The Diamondbacks enter the deadline on the fringe of NL contention. With a 47-50 record and multiple players on expiring deals, Arizona is weighing the short-term against future flexibility.
Dealing Suarez, Gallen, and possibly Kelly would clear salary and return high-upside prospects to replenish the system. GM Mike Hazen has resisted labeling the club as sellers but could shift if the D-backs don’t surge in the standings.
According to Newsweek, Arizona has made all three players “available to contenders,” signaling a readiness to engage in serious talks.

Timing and stakes
The proposed package trade would check off two major boxes for the Yankees: an upgrade at third base and a proven arm to solidify a rotation thinned by Gerrit Cole’s season-ending injury. It would also give manager Aaron Boone flexibility to shape his lineup and rotation ahead of a pivotal playoff push.
For Arizona, it’s a chance to cash in on veterans before they hit free agency and restock for 2026.
“It’s rare to see a deal where both teams walk away satisfied,” a National League scout said. “But this could be one. The Yankees get the now. Arizona gets the later.”
While no deal is finalized, talks have intensified, and momentum appears to be building. With rival clubs like the Mariners and the Brewers also seeking infield and pitching help, the Yankees may act quickly to secure its targets.
If completed, the trade would mark one of the most significant deadline moves of the 2025 season.
