The baseball can share more than just a game, and for example the journey for Norma Ortiz, mother of New York Yankees relief pitcher Victor Gonzalez, to witness her son’s major league game has been marked by bureaucratic hurdles and disappointments. Ortiz’s attempts to secure a Visa began in 2021, but due to pandemic-related delays, she only received approval last season when González played for the Dodgers. As noted by the NY Daily News, her arrival coincided with his demotion to the minors, leaving Ortiz disheartened but resilient in her pursuit to watch her son play.

Now, Ortiz has a second chance to witness Victor Gonzalez in action, this time in their native Mexico. The Yankees are slated to play a two-game exhibition series against the Diablos Rojos del México in Mexico City, with Victor Gonzalez set to appear in the first game at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium. Joining Ortiz will be Gonzalez’s brother, grandfather, and 12 other family members, making it a momentous occasion for the pitcher and his loved ones.

Despite Ortiz’s limited interest in baseball, her determination to support her son speaks volumes about their bond. Victor Gonzalez, who lost his father 13 years ago, is on the cusp of fatherhood himself, with his wife, Carolina Romero, expecting their first child. The couple plans to reveal the baby’s gender during the Mexico trip, adding another layer of excitement to the family reunion.

Why the Yankees’ game in Mexico is so important to Victor Gonzalez

For Victor Gonzalez, whose family boasts a legacy of professional baseball players, this trip holds deep significance beyond the game itself. It’s a chance to honor his roots and share his passion for baseball with his loved ones, bridging generations through the sport. While some may view the Mexico exhibition as a brief detour before regular season play, for Gonzalez, it’s a cherished opportunity to connect with his heritage and create lasting memories with his family.

Teammates like Caleb Ferguson recognize the profound importance of family to Gonzalez, emphasizing the emotional significance of this experience. ”Getting to play baseball in Mexico again for him is like a dream. To do it with a franchise like the Yankees is probably even better”.

Despite his nerves, Gonzalez eagerly anticipates the opportunity to pitch in front of his kin, knowing that this moment represents the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

In the midst of the excitement and anticipation, Victor Gonzalez remains grateful for the support of his family and the opportunity to represent the Yankees on such a meaningful stage.

As he prepares to take the mound in Mexico City, Victor Gonzalez carries with him the pride of his heritage and the love of his growing family, making this more than just a baseball game—it’s a testament to the power of familial bonds and the dreams they inspire.

“For this opportunity to come around and to be able to pitch and for them to see me over there, especially with the Yankees, it’s very exciting. I’m actually very nervous. I can’t wait until I’m out there pitching.” Victor Gonzalez said.
