Luis Gil, now a starter for the Yankees, reminisced about his early baseball days in the Dominican city of Azua. He recalled how, as a teenager, his strong arm caused problems while playing shortstop, with teammates often struggling to catch his hard throws to first base during an interview with Daily News.

His coaches recognized his impressive arm strength but also noted his lack of speed as an infielder. Despite his belief in his hitting skills, they advised him to shift his focus to pitching. Initially, this suggestion disappointed Luis Gil, who had a strong desire to remain a position player.

“I noticed that the strength of the arm was there on certain plays at short,” he told. “I would make good throws with velo to first br, and the first brman had trouble catching it. He would duck out of the way of the ball. I was kind of disappointed because I didn’t want to pitch. I wanted to be a position player.”

However, Luis Gil soon saw pitching as a viable route to a professional career. At 17, he signed with the Twins and began his journey as a pitcher. Now 26, Gil looks back on his initial reluctance with a sense of amusement.

Reflecting on the decision to switch to pitching, Luis Gil expressed gratitude for his career. He acknowledged the value of the advice he received, appreciating the direction it provided for his professional path.

Luis Gil’s story underscores the importance of recognizing and developing talent, even if it means altering a young athlete’s initial ambitions. It also highlights how early setbacks can lead to unexpected and fulfilling career opportunities in professional sports.

Luis Gil’s big emergence on the Yankees mound

The rookie has exceeded the Yankees’ expectations this season, compiling a 3.20 ERA over a career-high 112.2 innings before his start against the Angels on Tuesday. This performance is particularly noteworthy given Luis Gil’s return from Tommy John surgery, which kept him out for the past two seasons.

Reflecting on his rehabilitation, Luis Gil described it as a challenging period, expressing concerns about not regaining his pre-injury form. He cited stories of other pitchers who struggled to return to their previous levels after similar injuries. Despite these concerns, the 26-year-old Yankees pitcher remained dedicated to his recovery, working diligently toward a successful comeback.

“It was a tough time,” he told. “It was a big injury. First time going through something like that, and I was really worried about not being able to come back and be the same kind of pitcher. I heard stories of guys who go through an injury like that, and unfortunately, they can’t get back to where they were before it happened. But at the same time, I wanted to keep on going with the whole process and work as hard as I could.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged an increased appreciation for Luis Gil following his surgery. The pitcher also credited the birth of his daughter, Samantha, now two years old, as a significant source of motivation during his recovery.

Luis Gil’s impressive performance in spring training took the Yankees by surprise and secured him the team’s fifth starting position when Gerrit Cole was sidelined with elbow inflammation.

Given his history of surgery and the high number of innings he has pitched this season, there has been speculation about managing his workload and possibly moving him to the bullpen. However, the Yankees have not shown significant concern. Luis Gil has recently informed Boone of his readiness to handle a full season.

Boone noted that Luis Gil feels prepared and well-conditioned for the demands of the season. While Boone is enthusiastic about his current physical state, he also mentioned that the situation would continue to be monitored closely.

“He feels like he’s prepared and trained for the long haul of the season,” the Yankees manager said. “So I’m excited where he’s still at physically, but always something we’re paying attention to.”

Luis Gil continues to hone his pitching skills years after his transition from shortstop. This season, he has concentrated on improving his command, having issued three or more walks in 10 games. The rookie has also expanded his pitch repertoire beyond his high-velocity fastball. After modifying his slider grip a few weeks ago, he has relied on his breaking ball more often than his fastball in his last three starts.

Boone has noted Luis Gil’s growing ability to manage tough situations as the season progresses. This growth was evident during a rough stretch from June 9 to July 2, when Gil posted an 8.85 ERA over five starts, impacting his All-Star prospects.

The Yankees skipper acknowledged that Luis Gil is still working on establishing himself in the major leagues. He is enthusiastic about the pitcher’s professional development, lauding his improved routine and dedication both on and off the field. Boone admires his ongoing growth, adaptability, and strong performance earlier in the season, which showcased his potential, but also pointed out the typical challenges young pitchers face.

Since that difficult period, Luis Gil has made a strong comeback, allowing just six earned runs over his last four starts. This resurgence has bolstered the belief that his early-season success, highlighted by a 1.82 ERA before June 9, was not an anomaly. Also, the Yankees are confident of in his future as a key member of their pitching staff.
