Luis Gil’s Game 4 performance was a testament to grit, helping the Yankees stay alive in the World Series with an 11-4 win over the Dodgers. The rookie pitcher, though not overpowering, provided the steady presence New York needed to withstand the Dodgers’ lineup.

Making his World Series debut and only his second appearance in October, the 26-year-old showed poise despite coming off a 10-day layoff. He allowed four runs, with one crossing after he exited, on five hits and two walks over four innings.

After the game, Luis Gil, speaking through interpreter Marlon Abreu, reflected on the experience, calling it “beyond anything he could have imagined.” He expressed gratitude for the chance to contribute and noted that the outing was invaluable, a key moment early in what could be a promising career.

“I think it’s better than what I dreamt,” Luis Gil said after the win. “What an experience for me. The trust in the team to allow me to go out there and pitch and compete. I’m extremely happy with it. The experience gained from those four innings, can’t say enough about it.”

Manager Aaron Boone underscored Luis Gil’s innings as pivotal, given the bullpen’s heavy workload from Game 3. His effort to work into the fifth inning allowed the Yankees to manage their bullpen effectively, with a must-win Game 5 on the horizon.

“For him to get into the fifth inning was big,” the Yankees boss told. “As much pen as we had to use [Monday] going into today and hopefully to play again [Wednesday], too, for him to give us a little bit of length and in a winning game not have to overtax too many people was big.”

Luis Gil holds Yankees’ fate steady

His start was rocky as Mookie Betts opened with a double, followed quickly by Freddie Freeman’s home run, his fourth in as many games, giving the Dodgers a swift 2-0 lead. The Yankee Stadium crowd reacted with a familiar unease as Freeman’s shot sailed into right field.

Yet, Luis Gil displayed calm under pressure. Though not in peak form, he stayed composed, preventing further damage and keeping the Yankees within reach. His resilience, rather than dominance, proved vital in anchoring the Yankees against L.A.’s potent bats.

Luis Gil found his rhythm after a shaky start in Game 4, keeping the Yankees in control long enough to help secure an 11-4 win over the Dodgers. Though Mark Leiter Jr. began warming as early as the second inning, the pitcher steadied himself, allowing only two baserunners between the second and fourth frames, one of whom was erased by a double play.

The fifth inning proved more challenging. Entering with 59 pitches—nearing his recent limits after making only one start since September 28—Luis Gil showed signs of fatigue. Will Smith’s opposite-field home run cut the Yankees’ lead to two, and a walk to Tommy Edman signaled the end of his outing. Manager Aaron Boone turned to the bullpen, bringing in Tim Hill. However, an errant flip from Gleyber Torres on a potential double-play ball allowed Edman to score, complicating matters.

Luis Gil’s final line of four runs over four innings may not jump off the stat sheet, but in a must-win situation, his effort proved essential. Expected to be in the mix for AL Rookie of the Year, the young pitcher provided precisely what the Yankees needed—a chance to stay competitive and avoid an early deficit.
