Two of Baseball’s Biggest Stars Squared Off
The New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees 6-3 Tuesday in Subway Series, thanks to Eduardo Escobar’s tiebreaking two-run homer that capped a four-run first-inning rally.
In the first inning, Aaron Judge and Rizzo silenced fans at Citi Field with opposite-field homers on back – to – back pitches of Taijuan Walker (8-2).
The Mets roared back in the bottom half, however, when Starling Marte hit a homer against Jordan Montgomery (3-3). Back-to-back doubles by Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, and Escobar’s two-run, give the lead Mets 4-2.
Judge’s get his 38th home run, tying him for the major league lead. Alonso put the game back on track with his 83rd home run.
When Jose Trevino reached on an infield hit in the ninth, Daz dropped the ball for a mistake while throwing to second on Judge’s comebacker. Rizzo and Gleyber Torres were both struck out by Daz.
Montgomery, who is 0-2 in his last 7 starts, allowed five runs, while throwing 71 pitches.
The Yankees went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and were hurt by a pair of baserunner outs: Isiah Kiner-Falefa was picked off in the first inning and Rizzo at second on an intended double steal in the seventh.
The Yankees’ 14th homers came from Judge and Rizzo. Judge went 10 for 20 with five home runs in 20 at-bats with the drive into the right-field bullpens. Rizzo’s 23rd home run of the season snapped a 14-game drought.
Josh Donaldson hit Francisco Lindor in the third inning, and Marte scored from second.
The Yankees got a run back in the fourth on DJ LeMahieu’s RBI grounder, but Rizzo flied out to Brandon Nimmo, leaving the bases loaded.
Jeff McNeil ended a 0-for-19 slump in the eighth inning with a run-scoring single off Albert Abreu.
