Throughout the year (as of June), the New York Yankees legend CC Sabathia has made several appearances on MLB Network, at games, and more. One thing has become clear: almost nobody recognizes him due to his dramatic weight loss.

His most recent appearance was at the “Barnstorm Birmingham” Juneteenth celebration and “Fam Jam” softball game at Rickwood Field. The event, held on June 19, 2024, featured baseball icons such as Derek Jeter and Barry Bonds and honored the Negro Leagues.

However, not only at this event but over the last two or three years, CC Sabathia has been drawing attention due to his appearance on social media.

What happened to Sabathia?

Sabathia, 43, was almost unrecognizable as he stood next to Barry Bonds and Willie Mays’ Hall of Fame plaque. Known during his career for his 300-pound frame, the former pitcher appeared significantly slimmer in a blue “K. Griffey 24” T-shirt and matching shorts.

Since retiring in 2019, Sabathia has been open about his sobriety journey, which will reach nine years this October. In 2022, he tweeted: “Seven years ago, I made a decision to improve every aspect of my life. To be a better teammate, father, husband, and friend. I’m so thankful to have overcome alcohol dependency and live a healthy life. To many more years.”

Social media erupted with comments on CC Sabathia’s transformation, with fans noting, “CC Sabathia looks so good” and “Wow! Hardly recognize him. He’s living clean!”

Even the NJ’s Jimmy Hascup said that he and others might not recognize him.

This year, Sabathia helped organize a celebrity softball game before the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals game on June 30.
