NEW YORK – The disastrous outing of Domingo German was just a part of the Yankees’ 10-2 defeat by the Seattle Mariners. The team’s multiple defensive errors completed their march to the rout on Thursday.
Right from the beginning, Domingo German lacked an effective pitch to finish off the Seattle Mariners. As the game progressed to the third inning, both German’s command and the Yankees’ defense seemed to have deserted him. Eventually, with a discouraging 10-0 deficit and four solo home runs given up, German was pulled from the game in the fourth inning.
Yankees errors force the crowd to jeer
German’s presence was also notable during the troublesome third inning at Yankee Stadium, where the team’s defensive performance suffered from three errors. The displeasure of the crowd was evident as they expressed their dissatisfaction.
In Thursday night’s game, with the Yankees already behind by a score of 6-0, German and third baseman Josh Donaldson both made errors on a single play, resulting in two unearned runs. The incident prompted a lengthy replay review.
During the play, with Eugenio Suarez occupying first base and former Yankee Mike Ford at bat, Ford hit a slow ground ball that was mishandled by Donaldson, resulting in an error. Upon retrieving the ball, Donaldson swiftly made a throw to German, who was hustling to cover third base, while Suarez attempted to progress.
Although Suarez would have been easily tagged out, German failed to secure the throw from Donaldson, resulting in Suarez scoring and Ford advancing to second base.
Following the sequence of events, a delay ensued. The situation escalated as the crew chief initiated a challenge, which was subsequently followed by a successful challenge from Seattle manager Scott Servais. As a result, Ford advanced to third base due to the double error.
Following the sequence of events, Jose Caballero capitalized on the opportunity with a sacrifice fly, extending the Mariners’ lead to 8-0.
Yankees fail to prevent errors
Two batters later, the Yankees committed their third error of the game. At that moment, Anthony Rizzo, known for his reliable fielding at first base, made an unsuccessful attempt to field Jarred Kelenic’s slow roller near the foul line, resulting in the ball rolling into shallow right field.
Rizzo came to the rescue in preventing the inning from prolonging and another run from crossing the plate by making an impressive catch of a wide, bounced throw to first base, thus sparing Donaldson from committing a second error.
German’s outing came to an end in the fourth inning after giving up consecutive home runs to Teoscar Hernandez and Raleigh with one out.
But the errors by the Yankees proved to be costly by then.
