In a season plagued by challenges and setbacks, the New York Yankees have once again been hit with a blow as pitcher Carlos Rodon finds himself back on the injured list. The left-handed pitcher has been placed on the 15-day IL due to a left hamstring strain, marking another chapter in a series of unfortunate events for both Rodon and the Yankees.
Rodon’s journey this season has been riddled with hurdles, from forearm muscle strain to back discomfort. However, the most recent setback came when he was forced to exit his sixth start of the season early due to the hamstring injury. Despite his initial hopes of avoiding the IL, an MRI examination on Monday confirmed the extent of the strain, sidelining him for at least 15 days.
This latest injury raises concerns for Rodon’s contribution to the Yankees‘ pitching rotation. His struggles on the mound have been evident, with a 7.33 ERA, 25 strikeouts, and 18 walks in 27 innings over the course of six starts. The Yankees’ shallow starting pitching depth has been further exposed, leaving the team with uncertainty in their rotation.
As the Yankees list “TBA” for the Wednesday starter, the situation presents a potential opportunity for Luis Severino, who has been grappling with his own struggles, to regain a foothold in the rotation. Another option could be the recall of Randy Vasquez to fill Rodon’s spot. With an impending need for a starter against the Marlins on Friday, the Yankees’ decisions will carry significant weight.
To compensate for Rodon’s absence, the Yankees have called up reliever Nick Ramirez to take his roster spot. However, the team has also faced other roster changes. The return of Nestor Cortes from the injured list was overshadowed by the announcement that Domingo German would miss the remainder of the season for treatment related to alcohol abuse.
In a further reshuffling of their roster, the Yankees activated reliever Jonathan Loaisiga from the 60-day injured list. Additionally, former top prospect Deivi Garcia has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. The Yankees are navigating a complex web of challenges as they strive to maintain their competitive edge amidst these roster changes.
As the August heat blazes on, the Yankees find themselves grappling with a familiar adversary: injuries. While the team remains resilient, the road to success grows increasingly challenging. The season’s narrative continues to unfold, and Yankees fans are left hoping for a turnaround that can steer the team towards brighter days on the diamond.
