In recent weeks, Hal Steinbrenner has been assessing various potential moves as the Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, actively explores the market for additional talent. Despite the team’s emphasis on pitching, according to MLB writer Bryan Hoch, Cashman has consistently turned down offers, especially those involving top prospects such as outfielder Spencer Jones, right-hander Will Warren, and righty Chase Hampton.

Is this the year of the Yankees’ prospects?

Addressing the inquiries about potential trades, Steinbrenner expressed reluctance to part ways with promising players like Warren and Hampton. He emphasized that these individuals were in high demand during trade negotiations, but he was not willing to sacrifice their potential contributions to the team.

Spencer Jones, a 22-year-old outfielder, showcased his potential in the Yankees’ spring opener against the Tigers by delivering a remarkable 470-foot pinch-hit home run. As the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect, Jones is often compared to a left-handed Aaron Judge due to his impressive combination of power and athleticism. His 2023 stats reflect a strong performance in High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset, and he is anticipated to start the 2024 season at Double-A Somerset.

Chase Hampton, a 22-year-old right-hander, is ranked as the Yankees‘ No. 4 prospect. Known for his fastball that reaches up to 97 mph and a slider as his second plus pitch, Hampton has the potential to become a reliable No. 3 starter. With an expected start at Double-A Somerset in the upcoming season, he might see promotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the second half of the year.

Will Warren, a prospect of the new york yankees
Minor Leagues

Will Warren, a 24-year-old right-hander and the Yankees’ No. 8 prospect, has demonstrated his skills with a 10-4 record and a 3.35 ERA in the 2023 season. Equipped with a slider, a two-seamer, a curveball, and a changeup, Warren is poised to begin the 2024 season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He aims to showcase his abilities and earn a promotion to the big leagues, expressing his desire to contribute to the team’s pursuit of a championship.

Overall, as the trade discussions intensify and potential moves loom, the Yankees are navigating the delicate balance between acquiring additional talent and retaining their highly regarded prospects who represent the future of the franchise.

Every year is the year of the prospects. But the real question is: Is this the year that the prospects are looked to as the answer to the hole or deficiency in the Yankees big league roster? Will they be tapped to step up or will more be traded for another veteran?
