The Yankees have been dealt a major blow in the postseason, losing reliever Ian Hamilton for the remainder of the playoffs due to a calf injury sustained during Game 3 of the ALCS. Hamilton, who was injured while covering first base during Thursday’s game against the Guardians, will be replaced on the roster by right-hander Mark Leiter Jr.
Yankees bullpen faces new challenge after Ian Hamilton’s injury
The injury occurred when Ian Hamilton tried to throw a warmup pitch after making the play at first base and felt a sharp pain in his calf. He immediately left the field with a trainer and underwent further testing on Friday. As a result of the injury and roster replacement, Hamilton will not be eligible to return for the World Series should the Yankees advance.
This is the second significant injury Ian Hamilton has faced this season. The right-hander also missed nearly three months of the regular season due to a strained lat, a setback that interrupted an otherwise strong campaign. The 28-year-old had been a key piece of the Yankees’ bullpen when healthy, posting a 2.68 ERA in 38 games.
Mark Leiter Jr., who was acquired from the Cubs at the trade deadline, steps in to fill Ian Hamilton’s spot but comes with his own set of challenges. The 33-year-old was left off both the ALDS and ALCS rosters after struggling in the final stretch of the regular season. In 21 appearances for the Yankees, Leiter recorded a 4.98 ERA, allowing six home runs in 21 ⅔ innings. While he possesses the ability to generate strikeouts, his tendency to give up long balls has been a concern for the Yankees.
Ian Hamilton’s injury is the latest setback for the Yankees, who are facing elimination in the ALCS following a heartbreaking loss to the Guardians in Game 3. The bullpen, which has been heavily relied upon throughout the postseason, will now need to adjust without one of its most reliable arms.
Despite Leiter’s struggles, Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed confidence in the veteran reliever, citing his ability to miss bats as a potential difference-maker in high-leverage situations. However, the Yankees will need more than just pitching adjustments if they hope to rally from their current deficit in the series.
With Ian Hamilton’s absence, the Yankees’ bullpen depth will be tested as they continue their fight for a World Series berth. The team’s path forward just got steeper, but they remain determined to overcome the adversity.
