New York Yankees 2, Oakland Athletics 3
Shea Langeliers scored the winning run when second baseman DJ LeMahieu threw the ball away in the 11th inning. The Oakland Athletics beat the New York Yankees 3-2 on Saturday by holding them to just one hit.
With runners on first and second and one out, Chad Pinder hit a ground ball to shortstop that Lou Trivino thought was a double play (2-8).
The Yankees got the force at second base, but LeMahieu’s throw to first was off, letting Langeliers score the run that ended New York’s five-game winning streak.
The Yankees only got one hit in the 11th inning, which is the fewest hits they’ve had in an extra-inning game since at least 1906, according to Sportradar.
Even though neither team scored in the first nine innings, there was a lot going on in the extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Andrew Benintendi and Josh Donaldson scored the first runs of the game after A.J. Puk threw a wild pitch and catcher Sean Murphy made a throwing error.
With one out in the bottom half, Stephen Vogt hit a two-run home run off Ron Marinaccio to tie the game.
Through five innings, neither team was able to get a hit. This is the third time that has happened in a game in the last three years.
Adam Oller pitched for Oakland for the full eight innings, facing a minimum of 24 batters. He gave up one hit and one walk. In 88 pitches, one batter got on base because of a mistake he made. In the best game of his young career, Oller caught two runners stealing and got rid of the other one with a double-play grounder.
Domingo Germán was just as good for the Yankees. In 7 2/3 innings with no runs scored, he gave up three hits and no walks.
