Every Yankees fan loves to see Juan Soto returning to the Bronx for the 2024 season with a long-term deal. Jon Mudry, a 31-year-old Yankees fan from Connecticut, went a step further and made a splash at Game 1 of the ALCS by bringing an oversized novelty check to Yankee Stadium. The check, written by his wife Ashley, was made out to Juan Soto for $600 million, with the memo reading “Yankee4life.”
Seated behind the yellow W.B. Mason sign in right field, Mudry proudly displayed the check as Juan Soto took his position, a moment captured by television cameras. He repeated the gesture when the slugger hit a solo home run in the third inning, helping the Yankees secure a 5-2 victory over the Guardians. This homer marked Juan Soto’s first postseason shot with the Yankees.
Mudry shared that he had brought the same check to Game 1 of the ALDS, although it went unnoticed by TV cameras at that time. However, Juan Soto did see it and even tossed a ball in Mudry’s direction. Reflecting on that moment, Mudry joked that he should have increased the check’s amount.
While the figure may appear extravagant for an initial offer, Mudry speculated that Juan Soto could command a contract of that magnitude during the upcoming offseason. He highlighted Juan Soto’s youth—he is about to turn 26—his potential Hall of Fame trajectory, previous championship experience, and an impressive regular season performance as factors that could justify such a lofty valuation.
When asked about his motivation for the check, Mudry emphasized the Yankees’ need for a left-handed batter and a proven player like Juan Soto. He pointed to the outfielder’s youth and the Yankees’ ambition to win the World Series as key reasons behind his gesture.
“We need a lefty bat, we need someone that’s done it,” he said. “He’s a young player. So I mean, we gotta win. We gotta win the World Series. I don’t know (if $600 million is good enough). I think so. I think he’s gonna want to stay in New York. He might get offered more like [Aaron] Judge … but I think he loves New York. He loves the atmosphere. He shows it when he sees the fans cheer for him.”
The incident garnered significant attention, with Mudry’s face appearing on TBS and social media, resulting in a flurry of text messages from friends and family who recognized him on television.
Jon Mudry clarified that the $600 million check he displayed at Yankee Stadium was not drawn from his personal funds. Instead, his wife signed it in cursive as if it were an official offer from the “New York Yankees.”
Yankees fan adamant to see Juan Soto back in 2025
When asked if $600 million would be enough to keep Juan Soto in New York, Mudry expressed uncertainty. He suggested that the slugger might attract offers on par with or exceeding Aaron Judge’s record contract. However, Mudry believes Juan Soto’s affinity for New York, the city’s atmosphere, and his positive interactions with fans could play a significant role in his decision-making process.
“You can tell the passion’s real,” he said. “You can tell he’s really feeling the fans. It’s just a love connection.”
Mudry acknowledged that the Yankees would face stiff competition for Juan Soto in the free-agent market, particularly from their crosstown rivals, the Mets, who are currently in the NLCS. The possibility of Soto joining the Mets was a concern for Mudry, who hopes the Yankees can outbid their rivals.
He referenced Soto’s recent remark about how wearing the Yankees’ pinstripes “just feels different” as a positive indicator. Additionally, Mudry noted Juan Soto’s apparent enjoyment of engaging with Yankees fans and his seamless integration into the team’s clubhouse culture, along with the advantages of batting in front of Aaron Judge.
A potentially promising development for the Yankees emerged when Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reported that Juan Soto had met with team owner Hal Steinbrenner in July. Following the meeting, Soto praised Steinbrenner, highlighting the owner’s genuine concern for players’ well-being.
Despite these encouraging signs, Juan Soto, a four-time All-Star, is expected to explore free agency, represented by agent Scott Boras. When asked about his future plans during the ALDS, Juan Soto reiterated his preference to keep such matters private, even from his family. He emphasized his focus on enjoying the present and did not commit to any future decisions.
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman stated the team’s intention to actively pursue Juan Soto in free agency, expressing confidence that the Yankees have created an attractive environment and culture for players. However, he acknowledged that the ultimate choice lies with Juan Soto, and the free-agent market is competitive.
Jon Mudry, the fan who famously brought a novelty check to the game, echoed Cashman’s sentiment regarding the welcoming atmosphere the Yankees have established for Juan Soto. Mudry, a frequent attendee at games in right field, believes the fans have significantly contributed to making the Yankees star feel at home.
He expressed hope that the bond Juan Soto has developed with Yankees fans would influence his decision, even if only slightly. Mudry noted that the slugger’s enthusiasm appears genuine and that a strong connection exists between the player and the fanbase.
