As the Yankees embark on spring training, they confront early setbacks with injuries to two key veterans. Reliever Scott Effross, absent throughout the entirety of the 2023 season due to elbow surgery, faces an extended recovery period following back surgery, effectively sidelining him until midsummer. Manager Aaron Boone disclosed Effross’ status during the team’s initial press conference in Tampa, unveiling that the back issue stemmed from his rehabilitation following Tommy John surgery, culminating in a December surgical procedure.

Joining Effross on the injury list is catcher Jose Trevino, who enters camp nursing a calf strain sustained a few weeks prior. Trevino, whose 2023 season concluded prematurely due to wrist surgery, incurred the latest setback during spring training preparations. Despite Boone’s optimism regarding Trevino’s availability for Opening Day, the catcher will miss the initial Grapefruit League contests while engaging in comprehensive catching drills to facilitate his recovery. Anticipated to feature prominently in the team’s catching rotation alongside rookie Austin Wells, Trevino’s absence underscores the Yankees’ early season challenges.

Effross’ absence presents an opportunity for roster reshuffling within the Yankees‘ bullpen. With the reliever sidelined until midseason, contenders for the vacant spot include seasoned arms like Ron Marinaccio, Cody Poteet, Cody Morris, and Nick Ramirez, alongside prospects Will Warren, Clayton Beeter, and Yoendrys Gómez. Left-handed pitcher Clayton Andrews, acquired from the Brewers in exchange for Joshua Quezada, bolsters the bullpen options. Andrews, 27, joins the 40-man roster following Effross’ transfer to the 60-day injured list, augmenting the team’s depth amid early setbacks.

Meanwhile, veteran reliever Lou Trivino, who remains unsigned, looms as another potential asset for the Yankees. Boone hinted at ongoing evaluations regarding Trivino’s status, acknowledging the right-hander’s recovery journey from Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for the entirety of the 2023 season. Acquired during the 2022 trade deadline from Oakland, Trivino’s potential signing signifies the Yankees’ strategic response to bolstering bullpen depth amidst early-season uncertainties.

“We’ll let it play out,” Aaron Boone remarked regarding Trivino’s situation, highlighting ongoing deliberations surrounding the veteran’s readiness. As the Yankees navigate the challenges posed by early injuries to key personnel, strategic roster adjustments and potential signings underscore the team’s adaptive approach towards optimizing performance and mitigating setbacks during the upcoming season.
