The New York Yankees’ interest in Chicago ace Garrett Crochet is likely to hit a roadblock as the White Sox are insisting on including outfield prospect Spencer Jones in any potential trade, according to Bob Nightengale.

The Yankees appear hesitant to part with Jones, their first-round draft pick from 2022. The 23-year-old outfielder has demonstrated potential, registering a .720 OPS with 10 home runs in 295 at-bats this season. Jones recently showcased his skills at the MLB All-Star Futures Game, and the Yankees regard him as a potential future star, drawing comparisons to Aaron Judge.

However, the prospect of acquiring Crochet could tempt the Yankees to reconsider. Crochet, who has successfully transitioned from the bullpen to the starting rotation in 2024, has been outstanding. The 25-year-old has a 3.20 ERA over 20 starts and 107.1 innings this season, leading MLB with 150 strikeouts and posting a 3.9 fWAR.

Crochet’s youth and team control through 2026 add to his appeal as a trade target, possibly justifying the White Sox’s high asking price.

The New York Yankees’ potential trade for Chicago White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet comes with concerns about his innings limit. Crochet has pitched just 73 innings over his first three seasons in the majors, prompting questions about how his workload will be managed moving forward.

Despite this, the Yankees may see Crochet as a valuable long-term addition. Pairing him with ace Gerrit Cole could provide a substantial boost to the Yankees’ rotation for the foreseeable future.

With the trade deadline two weeks away, this potential deal is poised to be a focal point of speculation and discussion, especially considering the high-profile prospect the White Sox are demanding in return.

I have only a slight problem by including Spencer Jones in any deal. That said, if the White Sox are insistent on Jones being in the deal, then Jones is the only top prospect close to the Majors going in the deal. I’m not throwing in Ramirez and Hampton too, along with Jones. Jones, Arias, Warren, & Stevens. Take it or leave it.
