Once a top prospect, Deivi Garcia‘s chance to play in pinstripes might not arise again. On Monday, the Yankees designated him on assignment to create space on their roster. As Deivi Garcia waits in limbo to find out if another team picks him up through waivers, this is the newest sad twist in the career of a once-promising young player who was considered one of the best prospects.
The Yankees did this so to make sure Jonathan Loaisiga could join the team after being off the injured list for 60 days.
Garcia fails to convince Yankees
The 24-year-old former top prospect for the Yankees played in 28 games this season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Deivi Garcia was used as a reliever for multiple innings and had an ERA (a measure of how well a pitcher is doing) of 5.67.
This year, the pitcher who used to start games played in two matches for the Yankees. One of these games was in May, and Deivi Garcia managed to secure a save while pitching for three innings.
Manager Aaron Boone mentioned on Monday that Deivi Garcia had been facing challenges in maintaining a consistent performance. He noted that the pitcher had experienced some injuries that affected his progress in various seasons.
Boone also pointed out that Deivi Garcia had encountered difficulties, with instances where his performance would vary and times when he faced issues with his control over the game.
Deivi Garcia’s twist of fate
Not long ago, just before the 2021 season, Deivi Garcia was considered one of the top 100 prospects in baseball. People thought he would be a key player in the Yankees’ future pitching lineup, and some even compared him to the great pitcher Pedro Martinez.
In the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19, Deivi Garcia showed glimpses of his talent. He had an ERA of 4.98 in six starts, which indicated his potential as a pitcher.
However, in 2021, the pitcher only got the chance to start in two games for the Yankees. Unfortunately, he allowed six runs that counted against his performance in a total of eight and one-third innings. In the following year, his ERA was 6.89, and this was split between his time playing for Triple-A SWB and Double-A Somerset.
Boone acknowledged that the situation is demanding but emphasized that it doesn’t signify the ultimate conclusion for Deivi Garcia. He pointed out that the pitcher remains a young individual with the potential for growth.
The Yankees manager also pointed out that baseball is frequently characterized by a mix of triumphs and failures, with players occasionally running into issues following an early entry into the major leagues. However, he indicated that the chance for Deivi Garcia to find his way or make necessary adjustments is still open.
