DJ LeMahieu, once a cornerstone of the Yankees’ lineup, has had a challenging season, struggling to find his form at the plate.
However, on Wednesday night, he delivered a standout performance that reminded everyone of his capabilities, driving in six runs to lead the Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
DJ LeMahieu’s breakout game offers Yankees a glimmer of hope
LeMahieu’s night began with a bang. In the second inning, he connected on a grand slam off Phillies starter Christopher Sanchez, marking just his second home run of the season. The grand slam gave the Yankees a 4-0 lead and a much-needed offensive boost. LeMahieu wasn’t done, though. In the sixth inning, he added a two-run double off reliever Jose Ruiz, further extending the Yankees’ lead and cementing his role as the game’s hero.
This performance was a stark contrast to LeMahieu’s struggles throughout the season. Prior to this game, he had been mired in a prolonged slump, with just two hits and three walks in his previous 37 plate appearances. His slugging percentage had dipped to a dismal .216, leading to his reduced role as primarily a defensive replacement.
Despite the tough season, LeMahieu has remained determined to work through his difficulties. “Whatever happens, happens. Just got to keep working. Keep fighting,” he said after the game. While he acknowledged that one good game doesn’t necessarily signal a full turnaround, it’s a step in the right direction. “Today definitely felt good. I feel like I’m onto something,” LeMahieu added, hinting at a potential breakthrough.
General manager Brian Cashman, who has supported LeMahieu through his struggles, expressed cautious optimism before the game. “He’s struggled. He’s fighting through it,” Cashman said. He noted that despite LeMahieu’s difficult season, there’s still belief within the organization that he can find his way back to being a productive hitter. Cashman also pointed to LeMahieu’s strong finish to last season, where he posted an .812 OPS over his final 44 games, as evidence of his resilience and ability to bounce back.
LeMahieu’s season has been further complicated by injuries. Earlier this year, he dealt with a non-displaced fracture in his foot, which undoubtedly affected his performance. With LeMahieu under contract through 2026 and owed over $30 million, the Yankees are hopeful he can overcome these challenges and return to being a key contributor.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone is also hopeful that LeMahieu’s big game will lead to more opportunities. “Hopefully he continues to get opportunities and gets it going,” Boone said. He acknowledged the challenge of finding playing time for LeMahieu, especially with the emergence of Ben Rice and the addition of Jazz Chisholm Jr., but he believes there’s still a role for the veteran infielder.
As the Yankees continue to fight for a playoff spot, LeMahieu’s resurgence could be crucial. While one game doesn’t erase the difficulties of the season, it offers a glimmer of hope that LeMahieu can find his form and help the Yankees in their push for October.

While I’m happy for DJ because he’s a classy man & a great competitor, I have a difficult time believing that he’s suddenly found what seemed lost to age & injuries.
I hope I’m wrong & he’s somehow healthy enough to be a regular contributor, but if this was merely a small sample size fluke performance, I’m afraid it will lead Boone to rely on him to heavily, even if he falls back into performing as he did prior to Sunday’s game against the Phillies.
After all, both Boone & Cashman have a long track record of believing that every veteran will recapture his prior capabilities if you’re patient. Well, that philosophy has failed miserably numerous times & cost the Yankees many potential wins.
The list of crap “veterans” that Cashman & Boone have given a Multitude of Chances to Suck the past few years is seemingly endless, including Caleb Ferguson, Dennis Santana, JD Davis, Aaron Hicks, Josh Donaldson, and our constant tormentor, Gleyber Torres.
So, my fear is that Boone & Cashman may commit the same mistake with DJ if he returns to his prior poor performance.
Do I hope DJ has re-found his prior excellence? Yes, of course; he’s a classy man & a great hitter, at his best.
But am I afraid that he’s more likely to return to his prior poor performance at age 36? Definitely.
I hope I’m wrong, but I wouldn’t gamble a World Series on that hope; so, hopefully, Boone & Cashman will exercise some common sense (for a change!) & not live in denial if DJ reverts after Sunday great performance.
