Hit by injury to their regular lineup, the New York Yankees are adding shortstop Oswald Peraza to their big league team as one of their September call-ups. The New York Post’s baseball columnist Joel Sherman was the first to break the news on Twitter.

Major League rules say that teams can add two players to their rosters on September 1, and Peraza is set to be one of those two players for the Yankees, who are grappling with injuries to 13 of their top players.

Baseball America says that Peraza is the organization’s No. 2 prospect and that he will play a big role in the future of the team in the middle of the infield. Signed in 2016, the player started his professional career a year later with the Dominican Summer League Yankees.

The Venezuelan professional baseball shortstop is right behind Yankees‘ key infielder Anthony Volpe, who plays for Double-A Somerset. Peraza was part of the 40-man roster for the 2020 season that was canceled following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, someone asked General Manager Brian Cashman why Peraza hadn’t been moved up yet.

“There hasn’t been a lane yet for, ‘Hey, this opportunity has opened up and does he fit this category?’ The answer hasn’t been yes for that yet,” Cashman said.

The shortstop was often mentioned as a player who could be moved at the trade deadline as part of a package of prospects. But Cashman and the rest of the front office staff wouldn’t let the shortstop be part of any possible trades.

This season, Peraza has played in Triple-A with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He has hit .258 with 18 home runs and 49 RBI in 427 at-bats.

What do you think about the Oswald Peraza call-up? Will he be a vital asset in the Yankees’ September games? Let fans know what you think.
