The New York Yankees have bolstered their outfield depth by claiming Duke Ellis off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. The move was announced on Monday, ahead of the Yankees’ three-game series against the Washington Nationals.
Duke Ellis was recently designated for assignment by the Mariners, prompting the Yankees to make a series of roster adjustments, including transferring right-hander Ian Hamilton to the 60-day injured list to create space on the 40-man roster.
Ian Hamilton’s status and potential return
Ian Hamilton has been sidelined since mid-June due to a lat injury, and his move to the 60-day injured list appears to be more procedural than an indication of a prolonged absence. Having already missed a substantial portion of the season, Hamilton’s transfer was necessary to accommodate Ellis on the roster. The Yankees are optimistic about Hamilton’s recovery, as he has been making steady progress in his rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset. If all goes well, Hamilton could rejoin the bullpen soon, adding depth and experience to the pitching staff.
Yankees claim Duke Ellis: What to Expect
Duke Ellis, a 26-year-old outfielder, is known more for his speed and defensive capabilities than his offensive production. Ellis made his MLB debut earlier this season with the Chicago White Sox, appearing in eight games. Although he has yet to record a hit in the majors, he has demonstrated his value on the base paths, swiping four bases in those limited appearances. His speed was also evident during his time in the minors, where he stole 34 bases with the White Sox’s Double-A affiliate last year and added 17 more in just 32 games with the Mariners’ Triple-A team.
While Ellis doesn’t bring much to the plate offensively, his defensive skills and base-running prowess could make him a valuable asset for the Yankees, particularly in late-game situations. Currently, Ellis is expected to report to Triple-A, where he will continue to develop while awaiting a potential call-up. However, with highly-touted prospect Jasson Dominguez making waves in the minors, Ellis may have to wait his turn before seeing significant action in the big leagues.
Hamilton’s potential impact on the Yankees bullpen
Ian Hamilton’s return could be a significant boost for the Yankees’ bullpen, which has seen its share of struggles this season. In 2023, Hamilton was a reliable arm, posting a 2.64 ERA over 58 innings. However, his performance has dipped this year, with a 4.55 ERA over 29.2 innings, possibly due to the lingering effects of his injury. Despite the setback, Hamilton remains an important piece of the Yankees’ bullpen puzzle. His fastball, which consistently reaches the upper 90s, and his “slambio,” a hybrid of a slider and change-up, make him a deceptive and effective pitcher when healthy.
The Yankees are eagerly anticipating the return of several key players, including Hamilton, Cody Poteet, Clarke Schmidt, and Jon Berti, all of whom are expected to rejoin the team next month. These reinforcements could provide the Yankees with the depth and firepower needed to make a strong push in the final stretch of the season.
