New York Yankees 3, Minnesota Twins 4

NEW YORK — Carlos Correa hit a home run for the second straight game. In the eighth inning, he hit a two-run double off Clay Holmes that put the Minnesota Twins ahead and helped them beat the New York Yankees 4-3.

Correa hit a home run off of Nestor Cortes in the sixth, which helped the Twins come back from being down 3-2 in the eighth and hand the Yankees their first back-to-back losses of the season. After winning its first four series, New York’s best chance against the Twins is to split the four games.

Anthony Volpe started the game with his first home run in the major leagues. The next pitch, Aaron Judge hit his fifth home run of the season. Giancarlo Stanton‘s home run gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead in the sixth, but when both Judge and Stanton homered, it was only the third time that the Yankees lost.

Michael A. Taylor started the eighth with a single off of Holmes (0-1), who was brought in to pitch to right-handed batters at the top of the order in the eighth instead of the ninth. After Byron Buxton walked, Correa hit a sinker down the line in right field.

Correa had his second game with two or more RBIs since he came back to the Twins in the offseason after failing physicals with the New York Mets and San Francisco.

Correa was booed before each of his at-bats. He homered for the fourth straight game against the Yankees and got his 22nd hit of his career to give his team a lead in the eighth or later. He is also hitting .387 (12 for 31) against the Yankees in his last eight games.

Emilio Pagán (1-0) threw a perfect seventh inning for the Twins on Thursday, when they won 11-2. Jhoan Duran got his fourth save. When Judge and Stanton both homered before, the Yankees lost in the Field of Dreams game in 2021 and on last October 4, when Judge hit his 62nd home run.

On the second warm night in a row, when it felt more like midsummer than April, Volpe became the third-youngest Yankee to hit a leadoff home run at 21 years and 351 days, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Volpe also became the first Yankee to hit a home run in the first inning since Bobby Richardson on July 25, 1959, at Detroit.

“It was pretty neat from what I remember,” Volpe said of the reaction from his teammates. “I was pretty blacked out. It was cool.

Marvin Castillo, 30, from Brooklyn, caught the ball. He and his wife Andrea were sitting in row 5 of section 136. Castillo gave the ball back to Volpe and tried to make a trade.

Next, Judge hit a ball 404 feet into New York’s bullpen. Judge has hit five home runs in his first 14 games. In his record-setting 62-homer season, he hit three home runs in his first 14 games.

It was the 12th time that the Yankees started a game with two home runs in a row, and the first time since DJ LeMahieu and Judge did it at Toronto on June 25, 2019.

Kyle Garlick hit a home run in the seventh inning, and the Twins won their fourth game in the Bronx in the last 20 regular-season games.

In seven innings, Cortes gave up two runs and five hits. Cortes has made nine straight starts where he has given up two runs or less. This is tied for the longest streak ever by a Yankees starter.

Kenta Maeda was replaced by Louie Varland, who gave up Judge’s 55th home run in his major league debut on September 7 in New York.

Varland was supposed to fly in on Thursday, but his flight from Indianapolis, where Triple-A St. Paul played, was canceled, so he flew in early on Friday. In six innings, the man from Minnesota gave up three runs and six hits.
