The New York Yankees are contemplating the idea of becoming trade deadline buyers. According to a recent report by the New York Post, they are exercising caution and not rushing into any major market moves. Following discussions among the Yankees’ higher-ups, they have decided to take a few more days to evaluate their current position before making significant acquisitions before the August 1 deadline.
Despite being tied for last place in the highly competitive AL East division, the Yankees are still within striking distance of the final wild-card spot, trailing Toronto by only 2 ½ games. Suppose the team continues to perform well in the next few days. In that case, they plan to focus on adding an outfielder and a bullpen piece to bolster their roster, all while safeguarding their strong farm system by avoiding any trades that would deplete their prospect assets.
Yankees’ trade deadline chess game
Although the Yankees have expressed interest in notable players such as Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, and Nolan Arenado, it appears unlikely that these superstar players will be available for trade. As a result, the Yankees are shifting their attention towards pursuing outfield options that can enhance their team without sacrificing their prized prospects. Cody Bellinger of the Cubs is one possibility, but the Cubs, like several other teams, are currently undecided about making trades.
Other potential targets being considered by the Yankees include Rockies outfielder Randal Grichuk, as well as Cardinals players Dylan Carlson and Tyler O’Neill. For the third base position, the Yankees seem content with DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza as viable options. However, they may explore other third-base options, such as Jeimer Candelario from the Nationals and Jonathan India from the Reds, if the need arises.
The Yankees are optimistic about the potential impact of Nestor Cortes and Jonathan Loasiga returning to strengthen their pitching staff. Additionally, they are hopeful for the return of their superstar player, Aaron Judge, after the trade deadline. Despite their current stance of waiting before making significant moves, the Yankees do not envision themselves becoming sellers, regardless of the team’s performance in the upcoming games.
Owner Hal Steinbrenner was encouraged by the team’s recent performance in the series against the Royals and did not foresee a scenario where the Yankees would initiate a sell-off, even if their record were to worsen in the games against the Mets and Orioles. Instead, in such a situation, the Yankees might choose to maintain their roster status quo or make smaller moves to address specific needs around the edges of their team.
