New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe exited Thursday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels due to pain in his left foot. Volpe initially injured himself by fouling a ball off his foot in the second inning before fouling out. Despite playing five more innings in rainy conditions, he was replaced by Oswaldo Cabrera in the eighth inning after the Angels took a commanding 9-1 lead.
The team announced that Volpe is being examined by head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad.
The Yankees had a rough night, losing 4-9 to the Angels, but there was a bit of good news afterward. Aaron Boone shared that Anthony Volpe’s X-rays came back clean, and it’s just a bruise for now. Boone isn’t sure yet if Volpe will play tomorrow, but it seems like he dodged a more serious injury.
In his second season, Anthony Volpe is currently hitting .257 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs, showing improvement from his rookie season where he batted .209. He hit .245 before the All-Star break and has been on a hot streak since, batting .320 (24 for 75) in 18 games post-break.
Anthony Volpe’s impact on the Yankees
Anthony Volpe, who has been a pivotal figure in the Yankees‘ infield, has continued to solidify his role as the team’s long-term solution at shortstop, a position that has seen instability since the departure of Derek Jeter. After initial experiments with other players, Volpe’s emergence offered the Yankees a much-needed answer, particularly with his stellar defensive play.
In 2023, Volpe secured a Gold Glove award, marking him as one of the league’s elite defenders despite a controversial decision over Kansas City Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. This season, the New York native has continued to shine, ranking seventh among shortstops in defensive runs saved (DRS) and second in the American League for outs above average (OAA), trailing only Witt Jr.
Volpe’s defensive prowess has made him indispensable to the Yankees, with his consistency in the field compensating for fluctuations at the plate. His overall contributions have placed him 14th in total fWAR among all MLB players, highlighting his value to the team.
As Volpe undergoes evaluation, the Yankees and their fans are anxiously awaiting further details on the injury that has sidelined one of their brightest young stars.

Boone announced that X-Rays were negative. I can see Cabrera playing at least tomorrow night at SS, unless they want to move Jazz to SS, LeMahieu to 3B and give Rice a game vs. a LHP. With the Yankees you never know what the collaborative group will come up with lineup wise.
