Mayza, 32, spent the first seven seasons of his MLB career with the Toronto Blue Jays, becoming a familiar face in their bullpen. Yankees fans may recall him as the pitcher who surrendered Aaron Judge’s record-tying 61st home run back in 2022. Known for his sinker, Mayza has generally been a reliable middle reliever. However, his performance has notably declined this season, posting an 8.03 ERA and 1.94 WHIP across 35 appearances.
Toronto designated Mayza for assignment last week after he went unclaimed off waivers, leading to his release. Despite his recent struggles, his track record remains appealing. In 2023, Mayza was one of the top relievers for the Blue Jays, achieving a stellar 1.52 ERA and allowing just two home runs over a career-high 69 appearances.
The Yankees plan to assign Mayza to their Triple-A affiliate initially, hoping he can rediscover his dominant form. Should he bounce back, he could be a valuable addition to the big league bullpen, which has faced its own challenges this season.
The move reflects the Yankees’ ongoing strategy to find and develop potential assets for their bullpen. If Mayza can return to his 2023 form, he might soon contribute to the Yankees’ push for postseason success.
