C’S PLUS BASEBALL

Cam Eden, 26, was drafted by the Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB Draft and made his Major League debut late last season. His time in the big leagues was brief, featuring in just five games, where he managed one hit in six at-bats. Following the season, the Blue Jays removed him from their 40-man roster, opting to send him to Triple-A Buffalo. As Eden was not on the Jays’ 40-man roster this season, he remained eligible for trade beyond the MLB trade deadline.

Eden’s acquisition is not expected to significantly alter the Yankees’ plans as they push towards the end of the season. However, with outfielder Everson Pereira out for the season and the potential for Jasson Dominguez to be called up to the majors, Eden’s presence provides crucial cover at Triple-A. Additionally, the Yankees may consider him as a pinch-runner or defensive specialist in September or possibly even the postseason, given his speed and versatility.

This season, Eden has struggled offensively, hitting just .198 with a .299 on-base percentage and a .322 slugging percentage. His strikeout rate stands at 27.4%. However, he has demonstrated notable speed, successfully stealing 26 bases out of 33 attempts. This is his second campaign at the Triple-A level; last year he posted a .257 batting average with a .354 on-base percentage and managed 53 steals in 57 attempts.

Defensively, Eden is versatile, having played all three outfield positions throughout his career, with a particular focus on center field. In 2022, FanGraphs’ analyst Eric Longenhagen ranked Eden among the Blue Jays’ top-34 prospects, commending his speed and baserunning ability. However, Longenhagen also pointed out that Eden’s limited offensive output constrains his overall potential.

For now, Eden’s role with the Yankees appears to be a depth addition, but his speed and defensive skills could prove valuable as the season progresses.
