On a lively Sunday night at Fenway Park, the New York Yankees secured an 8-2 win against their fierce rivals, the Boston Red Sox, marking their first series victory in the second half of the season. This triumph was characterized by stellar performances on the mound and at the plate, with standout contributions from Carlos Rodon and Jazz Chisholm Jr., who made his debut in pinstripes.
How it happened
Carlos Rodon, a seasoned veteran for the Yankees, delivered a masterful performance. The left-hander limited the Red Sox to just two runs over 6.1 innings, striking out seven and maintaining control throughout. Despite giving up two solo home runs in the fourth inning, Rodon displayed resilience, ensuring the Yankees’ bullpen had a relatively easy night.
Jazz Chisholm Jr., newly acquired from the Miami Marlins, had a mixed debut. Wearing number 13 due to the retirement of number 2 in honor of Derek Jeter, Chisholm experienced a rocky start with a strikeout in his first at-bat. However, he showcased his versatility with a crucial stolen base and solid defensive plays, despite a misjudgment that led to a triple by Rafael Devers off the Green Monster.
Offensively, the Yankees were led by Alex Verdugo and Austin Wells. Verdugo, facing his former team, collected three doubles over the weekend, while Wells contributed a key double in the first inning, which drove in two runs, giving the Yankees an early 3-0 lead. Gleyber Torres also had a notable night, with a two-run single that extended the Yankees’ advantage in the opening frame.
The Yankees continued to apply pressure throughout the game. In the fourth inning, Ben Rice hit a sacrifice fly, increasing the lead to 4-0. Although the Red Sox tried to fight back with back-to-back home runs from Rob Refsnyder and Connor Wong in the bottom of the fourth, Rodon’s steadfast pitching and the Yankees’ robust defense kept them at bay.
In the eighth inning, Oswaldo Cabrera added to the Yankees’ dominance with a two-run home run, silencing the Fenway Park crowd and solidifying the 8-2 victory. This win provided a much-needed boost for the Yankees, who had been struggling with a series of poor results.
With this victory, the Yankees aim to continue their resurgence and strengthen their position in the competitive AL East. They now turn their attention to a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies, hoping to maintain their momentum and climb higher in the standings.
