New York Yankees 6-5 Kansas City Royals
The New York Yankees began their AL Division Series with a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in a game that saw five lead changes, intense defensive moments, and standout performances from unexpected players. Alex Verdugo played a pivotal role, delivering both offensively and defensively as the Yankees fought through mistakes and shaky moments to secure a series-opening win at Yankee Stadium.
Gerrit Cole struggles against Royals offense
Gerrit Cole took the mound for New York, expected to set the tone against a Royals lineup that had struggled offensively this postseason. However, Cole’s outing proved challenging as Kansas City consistently made hard contact, and he ultimately allowed four runs (three earned) over five-plus innings. Cole’s troubles began in the second inning when Salvador Perez singled, followed by a Yuli Gurriel walk and a single by MJ Melendez that led to Perez being thrown out at the plate. Tommy Pham then put the Royals on the board with a sacrifice fly.
Yankees take the lead behind Torres’ HR
The Yankees responded in the third inning when Alex Verdugo led off with a single, and Gleyber Torres took advantage of Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch, hitting a two-run homer to give New York a 2-1 lead. Kansas City quickly answered in the fourth, with MJ Melendez launching a two-run homer to regain a 3-2 lead.
New York found a way to respond, aided by the Royals’ pitching woes. In the fifth, after Kansas City removed starter Michael Wacha, Angel Zerpa and John Schreiber combined to walk in two runs, allowing the Yankees to retake the lead 4-3. However, Anthony Volpe’s throwing error in the sixth set up Garrett Hampson to deliver a two-run single, putting the Royals ahead once again, 5-4.
Alex Verdugo’s heroics lift Yankees in the seventh
Alex Verdugo made sure the Yankees did not stay down for long. His seventh-inning heroics began with a sliding catch in left field to save a run, but his biggest moment came at the plate. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. on second, Verdugo drove in the go-ahead run with a sharp single off Michael Lorenzen, giving the Yankees a 6-5 lead.
Clay Holmes, who has been working his way back into a reliable role in the bullpen, recorded five crucial outs between the sixth and seventh innings, while Luke Weaver was called upon for a four-out save. Weaver responded brilliantly, striking out Maikel Garcia to end the eighth and then finishing off the ninth with back-to-back strikeouts of Michael Massey and Bobby Witt Jr., before inducing a game-ending grounder from Vinnie Pasquantino.
The Yankees’ bullpen, with strong outings from Holmes, Tommy Kahnle, and Weaver, shut down the Royals after Cole’s departure, allowing only an unearned run over the final four innings. Despite a tough night for Aaron Judge, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, contributions from across the roster ensured the Yankees emerged victorious.
