New York Yankees 6-1 Tampa Bay Rays
On Friday night, the New York Yankees delivered a commanding 6-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, thanks to stellar performances by Gerrit Cole and Juan Soto. This win marks the Yankees’ fourth in their last six games, providing a much-needed boost as they aim to gain momentum in the second half of the season.
How it happened
Gerrit Cole (3-1) was in top form, striking out eight over six innings. He allowed just one run on six hits and threw 103 pitches, marking his second consecutive start reaching the 100-pitch threshold. The only blemish on his night was a solo home run by Brandon Lowe in the sixth inning. Fans showed their appreciation with a promotional bobblehead of Cole holding his Cy Young Award, underscoring his value to the team.
Juan Soto was the offensive catalyst, going 4 for 4 and reaching base five times. His performance included two doubles and raised his batting average from .295 to .303. Soto’s success against Rays starter Zach Eflin continued, as he improved his career average against the right-hander to .500 (17 for 34). Soto’s first hit, a bunt single, helped load the bases in the third inning, setting up a crucial four-run rally for the Yankees.
The Yankees took an early lead when Alex Verdugo’s grounder scored a run in the third inning. Austin Wells followed with a walk, and then Anthony Volpe delivered the game’s pivotal hit. With the bases loaded and two outs, Volpe roped a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving the Yankees a 4-0 lead. This hit was Volpe’s first multi-hit game since June 28 and provided much-needed support for Cole.
In the fourth inning, Soto doubled to the warning track in left-center, advanced to third on a bobble by left fielder Randy Arozarena, and scored on a throwing error by second baseman Richie Palacios. Soto continued his hot streak in the sixth with another double and scored on an RBI single by Aaron Judge, extending the Yankees’ lead to 6-1.

Looking ahead
The Yankees, aiming to build momentum in the second half of the season, look to continue their winning ways with LHP Nestor Cortes (4-8, 3.67 ERA) set to face Tampa Bay’s RHP Taj Bradley (4-4, 2.90 ERA) on Saturday afternoon. This strong start to the second half, highlighted by standout performances from Soto, Judge, and Cole, gives the Yankees a much-needed boost as they strive to climb the standings.
