New York Yankees 5-4 Tampa Bay Rays
NEW YORK — The New York Yankees escaped with a wild 5-4 triumph over the Tampa Bay Rays in 11 innings Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. The victory came despite defensive lapses that nearly derailed their efforts in a back-and-forth battle.
Ryan McMahon delivered the game-winning blow with a clutch single to center field in the bottom of the 11th. The newcomer from Colorado sent the automatic runner home when his deep fly ball found grass in front of Tampa Bay’s drawn-in outfield alignment.
The dramatic finish capped a roller-coaster evening that featured multiple momentum swings. New York remains four games back of the first-place Blue Jays in the American League East standings.
Stadium witnesses offensive fireworks
Tampa Bay struck first in the third inning when Brandon Lowe doubled home the opening run in his return from injury. Both clubs struggled to generate consistent offensive pressure until the late innings brought explosive action.
The Yankees answered in the eighth frame behind Trent Grisham’s leadoff home run. Giancarlo Stanton followed with an RBI single that pushed New York ahead 2-1.
That advantage vanished quickly in the ninth when Josh Lowe launched a two-run homer off closer Devin Williams. The blast appeared to give Tampa Bay the upper hand until Anthony Volpe responded with his own solo shot against Pete Fairbanks.
Volpe’s sixth home run in 12 games tied the contest and sent it to extra innings. However, his offensive heroics couldn’t mask ongoing defensive concerns.
Extra frames deliver more drama
The seesaw battle continued in the 10th when Jonathan Aranda lifted a sacrifice fly off Luke Weaver to restore Tampa Bay’s lead. Cody Bellinger kept the Yankees alive with a crucial triple off Edwin Uceta that plated the equalizer.
The 11th inning proved decisive when Rays reliever Kevin Kelly committed a game-changing balk. The miscue advanced both Yankees runners into scoring position with no outs and forced Tampa Bay to bring their outfielders in.
McMahon capitalized on the defensive alignment by driving his game-winner over the drawn-in fielders’ heads.
Defensive woes continue to haunt Yankees
New York’s victory came despite another shaky defensive performance. Volpe committed his third throwing error in two games and now leads Major League Baseball with 16 total miscues this season.
The shortstop’s fielding struggles have become a growing concern as the Yankees push toward October. His recent mistakes have led to unearned runs and created unnecessary late-game pressure.
Tim Hill (4-3) captured the victory after working a scoreless 11th inning. McMahon contributed defensively with a spectacular leaping grab on Brandon Lowe’s liner.
Kelly (0-3) absorbed the loss for Tampa Bay after the costly balk set up the Yankees’ winning rally.

Series finale looms Thursday
The four-game set concludes Thursday afternoon in the Bronx. Marcus Stroman (2-2) gets the starting assignment for New York following his recent return from the injured list.
Tampa Bay will counter with right-hander Ryan Pepiot (6-8) as they attempt to salvage a series split. The Rays entered this series looking to gain ground in the division race, but now face the prospect of falling further behind.
The Yankees will hope to clean up their defensive miscues while building momentum for the season’s final two months. Wednesday’s victory provided both encouragement and concern as they navigate the competitive AL East landscape.
