New York Yankees 5-1 Washington Nationals
NEW YORK — Giancarlo Stanton delivered a towering 451-foot two-run blast and collected five RBI for the first time since 2022, propelling the New York Yankees to a commanding 5-1 triumph over the Washington Nationals Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees secured their third straight victory while maintaining position within half a game of the Boston Red Sox for the American League’s premier wild-card spot.
Stanton dominates at the plate

Giancarlo Stanton seized control during the sixth inning by crushing a slider from Orlando Ribalta deep into the left-field bleachers, extending the Yankees’ advantage to 5-1. The blast marked his fifth homer across seven games and the 446th of his career.
Stanton had previously cleared the bases with a double off the left-field fence’s top during the third inning, completing a rally that started with Paul Goldschmidt’s double and free passes to Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger. His five-RBI outburst represented his first such performance since May 12, 2022, against the Chicago White Sox. The display marked his eighth career contest with five or more runs batted in.
Gil provides stability, relief corps delivers
Luis Gil (2-1) completed five solid innings, surrendering five hits and one run. He issued four walks while striking out five batters in his third start since recovering from a lat strain. His lone blemish came via an RBI single by CJ Abrams during the third frame.
Tim Hill eliminated a sixth-inning threat after Fernando Cruz departed with bases loaded, forcing a groundout to maintain the Yankees’ four-run margin.
Key moments and statistics
Stanton’s bases-clearing double during the third inning altered the game’s trajectory following consecutive walks that loaded the bases. Hill’s sixth-inning escape prevented Washington from narrowing the deficit. Stanton has posted a .346 batting average (17-for-49) with runners in scoring position this season.
