As spring training approaches for the 2025 season, the New York Yankees are contemplating a significant strategic shift in their lineup construction. Manager Aaron Boone has revealed intriguing plans that could place young phenom Jasson Dominguez in the crucial leadoff spot, marking a new era for the club in the wake of Juan Soto’s departure.

The case for Dominguez leading off

During a revealing conversation with WFAN’s Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata, Boone articulated his vision for the Yankees’ lineup architecture, highlighting Dominguez’s diverse skill set as ideal for the leadoff role.

“He gets on a lot, he also has power and can really run, too,” Boone emphasized, outlining the essential attributes that make Dominguez an attractive candidate for the position.

The Yankees find themselves in a period of transition at the top of the order, potentially implementing a rotating cast of leadoff hitters. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has emerged as another viable option, suggesting the possibility of a strategic platoon system. This approach follows a 2024 season that saw seven different players occupy the leadoff spot, primarily Gleyber Torres (now with Detroit) and Anthony Volpe, who is projected to hit lower in the order for 2025.

Despite newcomer Cody Bellinger possessing the traditional leadoff skill set, Boone’s current thinking appears to favor keeping both Bellinger and Chisholm Jr. in run-producing positions, maximizing their power potential in the middle of the order.

How Yankees’ Opening Day lineup might look

With the Yankees’ first exhibition game scheduled for February 21 and Opening Day approaching, Boone’s lineup preferences are becoming clearer. Should Dominguez secure the leadoff role, the potential Opening Day lineup projects as follows:

  1. Jasson Dominguez, LF
  2. Aaron Judge, RF
  3. Cody Bellinger, CF
  4. Giancarlo Stanton, DH
  5. Jazz Chisholm Jr., 2B
  6. Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
  7. Austin Wells, C
  8. Anthony Volpe, SS
  9. Oswaldo Cabrera/DJ LeMahieu, 3B

The departure of Juan Soto to the crosstown Mets creates a significant void in the Yankees’ offensive framework. The dissolution of the Soto-Judge partnership—which produced a combined 99 home runs and exceptional offensive metrics in 2024—elevates the importance of Dominguez’s development as a table-setter for the powerful lineup that follows.

Evaluating Dominguez’s readiness

Fresh off his 22nd birthday, Dominguez represents both immense potential and calculated risk. His 2024 campaign was largely interrupted by recovery from Tommy John surgery, followed by an oblique strain that further complicated his return to action. However, his brief but explosive 2023 MLB debut—featuring four home runs in an eight-game span before his elbow injury—offered a tantalizing glimpse of his capabilities.

His minor league track record provides additional encouragement, particularly a robust .373 on-base percentage across 352 games. This consistent ability to reach base aligns with Boone’s assessment that Dominguez possesses the fundamental “DNA” required for leadoff success. The key to his effectiveness will lie in maintaining plate discipline while adapting to major league pitching.

Defensive considerations and alignments

Boone also outlined the Yankees’ defensive strategy, which positions Dominguez in left field despite his natural center field experience. This arrangement accommodates Bellinger’s superior defensive metrics in the center while maintaining Judge’s established presence in the right field. The adjustment period for Dominguez in left field remains a work in progress, as evidenced by his defensive challenges during limited 2024 appearances.

“We’ll try and get Dominguez up to speed in left,” Boone acknowledged, emphasizing the ongoing nature of this positional transition.

The outfield configuration maintains flexibility through various scenarios. When Judge serves as a designated hitter, Bellinger will shift to right field, creating opportunities for Trent Grisham in center. Bellinger’s versatility extends to occasional first base duties, providing rest options for Paul Goldschmidt.

The anticipated return of Everson Pereira from Tommy John surgery adds another layer of outfield depth, with Boone expressing optimism about his potential contribution to the roster mix as spring training progresses.

Infield dynamics remain in flux

Beyond outfield arrangements, the Yankees continue to evaluate their infield configuration. While Jazz Chisholm Jr. stands as the presumptive second baseman, third base remains contested territory. The competition features Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, and DJ LeMahieu, with the organization maintaining awareness of external acquisition possibilities.

LeMahieu’s situation presents particular intrigue, as Boone maintains faith in the veteran’s potential resurgence. “The reality is, DJ has been an amazing hitter. He’s just been hurt,” Boone observed, suggesting that improved health could catalyze a return to form.

The possibility of additional roster moves before Opening Day adds another dimension to the infield equation, as the Yankees remain active in trade discussions.

Future considerations and market activity

The Yankees’ roster construction continues to evolve, with particular attention focused on resolving Marcus Stroman’s status. Currently positioned outside the projected rotation, Stroman’s $18 million salary and a potential vesting option for 2026 complicate trade scenarios, though negotiations remain ongoing.

As the season approaches, the Yankees’ lineup configuration will likely see further refinements. Boone’s willingness to entrust Dominguez with leadoff responsibilities reflects both confidence in the young outfielder’s potential and recognition of the need to develop internal solutions following Soto’s departure.

Dominguez’s success in this role could provide long-term stability atop the order, though his adaptation to both offensive and defensive demands will face intense scrutiny. Should adjustments become necessary, Boone maintains the flexibility to explore alternative arrangements in pursuit of optimal lineup productivity.

The spotlight now falls squarely on Dominguez as he prepares to potentially assume a pivotal role in baseball’s most scrutinized lineup. His performance could significantly influence the Yankees’ offensive identity throughout the 2025 campaign.
