Torres hit a game-ending HR in the ninth inning

Gleyber Torres hit a game-ending home run to lead off the ninth inning, and the New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Torres give the Yankees their 3rd walk-off win of the season. His fourth home run of the season helped New York to its 12th win in 13 games.

Torres also had a game-winning single against Cleveland on April 23. His seven walk-off hits since 2018 are the most in the majors, and this was his second game-ending homer.

After Rangers starter Dane Dunning’s no-hitter bid was broken up by an infield single by Aaron Judge to start the inning, Giancarlo Stanton hit a sacrifice fly.

Kole Calhoun hit a game-winning home run on Yankees starter Gerrit Cole’s final pitch, but the Rangers committed 3 errors and snapped a four-game winning streak.

In 6 1/3 innings, Cole allowed a run and five hits. He struck out ten, walked one, and threw 114 pitches, reaching 100.6 mph.

It was the most pitches thrown by any starter this season. It was also Cole’s most pitches since throwing 116 against the Angels.

Cole gave up three hits in the first two innings. Cole retired 14 of 15 hitters before Calhoun connected.

In six innings, Dunning allowed one run and two hits. He struck out five, walked three, and did not exceed 90.8 mph on his 100 pitches.

With one out in the seventh, Calhoun ended Cole’s bid for a third straight scoreless start by a full count 97.6 mph fastball.

Judge hit an infield single to third baseman and beat the throw on Dunning’s 86th pitch. Following Rizzo’s single, which moved Judge to third, Stanton’s fly ball gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

Jonathan Loáisiga followed Cole with 1 2/3 innings. Clay Holmes (3-0) worked around Mitch Garver’s double in the ninth.
