New York Yankees 14-4 Philadelphia Phillies
New York Yankees routed the Philadelphia Phillies 14-4 on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park, with Aaron Judge hitting two home runs to bring his MLB-leading total to 39. Jazz Chisholm Jr. also contributed significantly, hitting his first two homers in a Yankees uniform. The game showcased the Yankees’ dominant offense, leaving the Phillies struggling to keep up.
The victory marked the Yankees’ first three-game winning streak since early June.
How it happened
Aaron Judge, Chisholm, and Ben Rice each homered off Phillies’ All-Star pitcher Zack Wheeler in the first two innings. Judge later hit a two-run homer off Yunior Marte, reaching a league-best 99 RBIs. Anthony Volpe hit his ninth homer of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth inning, and Chisholm capped the Yankees’ night with a ninth-inning homer off Phillies’ catcher Garrett Stubbs, giving New York its first six-homer game of the season.
The Yankees had not won three consecutive games since June 9-12. Giancarlo Stanton went 0 for 4 with a walk after missing 28 games due to a hamstring injury. Chisholm made his first professional start at third base in just his second game for the Yankees.
Judge became the first player this season to homer off Wheeler’s sweeper, and Yankees fans chanted “MVP! MVP!” after his seventh-inning homer gave New York a 9-3 lead.
The Phillies, who seemed on track for their best record in franchise history, have hit a midseason slump, losing nine of their last 13 games. Wheeler (10-5) struggled, allowing seven runs and three walks in five innings.
Luis Gil (11-5) struck out eight and allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, allowing just one run on a forceout by All-Star Trea Turner.
Brandon Marsh hit a solo home run for the Phillies in the fourth inning. Juan Soto drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double, and Austin Wells added a two-RBI triple off Wheeler in the fifth, extending the Yankees’ lead to 7-1.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Yankees’ lineup on Monday night showed its potency, scoring 40 runs over their last four games.
