New York Yankees 1-2 Boston Red Sox
A clutch solo homer from Aaron Judge in the ninth inning provided the New York Yankees with hope, but Carlos Narváez extinguished it with a walk-off RBI single off the left-field wall in the 10th as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Yankees 2-1 in Friday night’s series opener at Fenway Park.
The setback snapped a three-game winning streak for the Yankees (42-25) and represented Boston’s third consecutive victory over New York this season. Despite Judge’s late-game theatrics, the Yankees failed to mount consistent offensive pressure against Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet, who crafted a career-best 8 1/3-inning performance.
Judge’s Dramatic Rally, Then Fenway’s Crushing Blow
Judge struggled in his initial three plate appearances against Crochet, striking out each time, but found vindication in his fourth opportunity. With one out in the ninth, he connected on a 99.6 mph fastball and drove it 443 feet beyond the Green Monster to even the score at 1-1. The blast marked his 21st homer this season.
Crochet departed immediately following Judge’s shot, turning duties over to Aroldis Chapman, who navigated the ninth without additional trouble. Overall, Crochet permitted merely four hits while walking none and recording seven strikeouts.
Extra Frame Collapse
The 10th inning deteriorated rapidly for the Yankees. Tim Hill entered with automatic runner David Hamilton positioned at second base. Following a groundout that advanced Hamilton to third and Hill’s walk to Rafael Devers, he struck out Ceddanne Rafaela. However, with two outs, Narváez lined a drive off the left-field barrier, scoring Hamilton with the decisive run.
Yarbrough’s Outing and Boone’s Dismissal
Yankees starter Ryan Yarbrough worked efficiently but briefly. He completed 4 2/3 innings, surrendering four hits, three walks, and recording three strikeouts. The bullpen maintained competitive balance — until the 10th frame.
During a crucial sequence in the 10th inning’s top half, DJ LeMahieu chopped a grounder along the first-base line that officials ruled foul. Yankees manager Aaron Boone contested the call through replay review, but the decision stood. Boone protested the ruling and received his third ejection this season.
