While the Super Bowl enthralls everyone, one name stands out amidst the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers’ battle: Patrick Mahomes has captured the attention of Aaron Boone. The New York Yankees’ manager took to the Yes Network to offer his thoughts on the star quarterback’s performance.

During a recent talk, Aaron Boone, manager of the New York Yankees, reminisced about Mahomes’ intriguing brush with baseball. Boone marveled at Mahomes’ transcendent athleticism, highlighting his ability to seamlessly blend skills from his baseball and basketball backgrounds onto the football field.

On a brand-new edition of Yankees News & Views, @JackCurryYES asked Aaron Boone if he thinks Patrick Mahomes’ baseball background is noticeable whenever the superstar QB is in action! Watch their conversation now on the YES App: https://t.co/0cgHA98g02 pic.twitter.com/uGVD2W82MH

“Patrick Mahomes is a rare breed of athlete,” Boone remarked. “His arm angles, agility, and fluid movements evoke images of a seasoned shortstop turning a double play. You can see the influence of his baseball and basketball roots in every aspect of his game.”

Almost a Yankee

Indeed, Patrick Mahomes’ journey to football superstardom almost took a different turn. Damon Oppenheimer, a Yankees scout, first caught wind of Mahomes’ prodigious talent in 2014. Recognizing his potential as a baseball phenom, Oppenheimer saw Patrick Mahomes as a future star in the outfield, armed with a cannon for an arm and the agility of a seasoned athlete.

Yankees considered drafting Patrick Mahomes in 2014: “he had a big arm in case something happened and he could pitch.”

“Patrick Mahomes possessed all the attributes of a standout baseball player,” recalled Oppenheimer. “His powerful arm, speed, and raw talent made him a tantalizing prospect for the Yankees.”

Mike Leuzinger, another Yankees recruiter, echoed Oppenheimer’s sentiments, envisioning Mahomes as a dual-threat player capable of dominating on the mound and in the field.

“Mahomes had the makings of a true baseball prodigy,” remarked Leuzinger. “His fastball touched 94 miles per hour, and his athleticism was second to none. He could have been a force to be reckoned with in Major League Baseball.”

However, fate had different plans for Patrick Mahomes. Despite the allure of a potential baseball career, Mahomes ultimately chose the gridiron over the diamond. His decision to pursue football paid dividends, as he ascended to become one of the most electrifying quarterbacks in NFL history.

Derek Jeter as an idol

Yet, Mahomes’ ties to baseball remain evident. A recent reunion with MLB legend Derek Jeter served as a poignant reminder of his past. Patrick Mahomes presented Jeter with a cherished photo from their shared history, reflecting on the impact the Hall of Famer had on his formative years.

“While my journey led me to football, my roots in baseball run deep,” Mahomes reflected. “Derek Jeter taught me invaluable lessons about professionalism and dedication, qualities that have shaped me both on and off the field.”

As Mahomes continues to etch his name into the annals of football history, his almost-journey to the Bronx stands as a testament to the enduring allure of athletic potential. While he may never don the iconic pinstripes of the New York Yankees, Patrick Mahomes’ legacy as a transcendent athlete transcends the boundaries of sport, embodying the essence of greatness in every endeavor he pursues.
