The Night’s Highlights may have Come from Jose Trevino, but It was a Team Effort

Only one out into the 3rd inning, Noah Syndergaard continued walking off the mound, his head bowed also expression blank. Thor had no idea he’d get hammered when he returned to New York.

He knew it was going to be a long night after having fallen behind leadoff batter DJ LeMahieu 3-0.

Aaron Judge jumped to get his glove far, preventing Shohei Ohtani from hitting a first-inning home run. A two-run homer by Matt Carpenter capped a four-run bottom half.

Starting a three-game series against Ohtani, Mike Trout, and company, New York improved to 34-14 but sent 27-23 Angels to their season-worst sixth consecutive loss.

Syndergaard played catch with Angels teammate Reid Detmers in Central Park on Monday.

At Yankee Stadium, Syndergaard looked nothing like his old flamethrowing self. He returned to pitch 2 innings in the final week of the previous season.

Syndergaard (4-3) struck out just one batter on 45 pitches, avg 94 mph with his fastball. He gave up five runs on 7 hits and a walk, raising his ERA from 3.08 to 4.02.

Jordan Montgomery (1-1) pitched 7 innings of a four-hit ball, allowing Luis Rengifo’s 7th homer on a hanging curveball. He has given credit to Judge’s grab as crucial.

The Yankees’ Jose Trevino also homered and had three hits, tying a career-high.

With one out in the 1st, Judge walked on 4 pitches, and Anthony Rizzo followed with an RBI double to rub off the glove of a diving Trout in the center.

Gleyber Torres made it 2-0 with a drive off the top of the glass in front of the left-field bullpen; believing the ball was out, he jogged between 1st and 2nd and was called out on a video review for overrunning 3rd. Miguel Andujar led off with a soft single, and Carpenter followed with his second home run since joining the Yankees last week.

This season, 12 of Syndergaard’s 20 runs have come in the 1st inning. It was his 2nd one-out, a six-run outing in 3 starts, following a one-out, six-run thrashing at Texas on May 16.

In the second inning, LeMahieu added an RBI double.

Following years of lobbying, Yankees manager Aaron Boone smiled as he recalled allowing Judge to play center field last season.
