Jazz Chisholm has been heavily linked to the New York Yankees in recent weeks, especially as the Miami Marlins have slipped out of the playoff race. However, the possibility of Chisholm joining the Bronx Bombers may not be entirely positive.
Yankees target Jazz Chisholm to bolster roster, clubhouse concerns linger
While most teams are still in the Wild Card picture, the Marlins appear to be in selling mode ahead of the July trade deadline. Chisholm, with a 105 wRC+ and 13 home runs on the season, is widely expected to be dealt. The lefty-swinging outfielder has also been playing some second base, possibly auditioning for teams looking for infield help.
Yet, the Yankees might have reservations about Chisholm’s clubhouse presence, as reported by Jorge Castillo of ESPN. Could this deter them from adding him to their team? It’s uncertain, but it might push them to explore other options for an upgrade.
From a power and speed standpoint, Jazz Chisholm’s appeal is obvious. He could take full advantage of the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium. Statcast’s Expected Home Run metric estimates that he would have hit 19 home runs if he played all his games in the Bronx. While this is not a perfect science, given that the Yankees only play 50% of their games at home, LoanDepot Park is notably more pitcher-friendly compared to most AL East fields.
Chisholm would provide the Yankees with a needed boost, improving their sluggish roster. But concerns about his clubhouse presence and overall inconsistency at the plate present two major issues. Chisholm has publicly spoken about his issues with former Marlin Miguel Rojas, who did not appreciate Chisholm’s on-field antics. While the full truth of the matter is unknown, it likely did not sit well with everyone involved.
Additionally, reports have surfaced about friction between Chisholm and the Marlins, suggesting a natural abrasiveness in his presence. This is speculative, though, and the Yankees have previously overlooked character concerns to improve their roster. Aroldis Chapman was acquired despite his domestic violence incident in 2016, and they continued to roster Domingo German until his outburst in 2023.
When it comes to clubhouse issues, the Yankees have shown a willingness to take risks. Alex Verdugo was not well-liked in Boston, especially towards the end of the 2023 season, leading to multiple benchings by Alex Cora. This did not stop the Yankees from acquiring him, despite his 98 wRC+ and being a worse all-around player than Chisholm. They also picked up Josh Donaldson, who had been considered a malcontent in Minnesota, including calling out ace pitcher Gerrit Cole regarding foreign substances.
Either what the public knows about Jazz Chisholm does not tell the full story, or the Yankees are suddenly more cautious about off-field concerns. Historically, they have turned a blind eye to these issues if the player can help the team. With their team OPS outside of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto at .672, Chisholm and his .736 OPS would be a significant upgrade.
In conclusion, while Chisholm’s talent and potential fit with the Yankees are clear, the concerns about his clubhouse presence might be significant enough to make the Yankees hesitate. The decision to pursue him will ultimately hinge on whether the Yankees prioritize talent over potential off-field issues.
