In the midst of the New York Yankees’ ambitious offseason overhaul, which has seen the acquisition of powerhouse talents like Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, Devin Williams, and Paul Goldschmidt, a compelling storyline has emerged around their versatile infielder Oswaldo Cabrera. The 25-year-old utility player has caught the attention of several Major League Baseball organizations, sparking discussions about his potential role in the Yankees’ evolving roster strategy.

The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty has reported growing interest from multiple teams, highlighting Cabrera’s emergence as a coveted asset in the trade market.

Source says teams have checked in w/ the Yankees on the availability of Oswaldo Cabrera, who has spent the offseason focusing on improving his hitting from the right side as a switch-hitter.

Here's a wider look at where the Yankees stand with 2B/3B right now as rumors swirl:…

However, Kuty also added to his comment on “X” that the Yankees are not amenable to any trade talk involving Cabrera and see him as a key player at utility position for the 2025 season.

“Probably could have included in this tweet that the Yankees don’t seem likely to move Oswaldo Cabrera, who is entering his third season of the rookie pay scale and won’t be a free agent until after 2028,” he wrote. “Once again, he fits well in a UTL role.”

Oswaldo Cabrera: The Swiss army knife of the Yankees’ roster

The 2024 season showcased Cabrera’s exceptional adaptability across 108 game appearances. While his batting statistics might not jump off the page—recording a .247/.296/.365 slash line alongside eight homers, 36 RBIs, and four stolen bases—his defensive versatility has proven invaluable. Cabrera demonstrated remarkable flexibility by manning six different positions throughout the season, including all infield spots and both corner outfield positions. His defensive excellence particularly shone at third base, where he accumulated an impressive seven defensive runs saved (DRS) across 566.1 innings, according to FanGraphs’ metrics.

Cabrera’s combination of defensive prowess, youth, and financial appeal makes him particularly enticing to potential suitors. With a modest $800,000 salary locked in for 2025 and team control extending through 2028, he represents a rare blend of current utility and future potential.

Bronx Bombers at strategic crossroads

The Yankees find themselves at a pivotal decision point regarding Cabrera’s future. Following Gleyber Torres’s exit, there’s a clear pathway for him to step into a permanent role at either second or third base. Both Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman have publicly endorsed his defensive capabilities while expressing optimism about his offensive development.

Yet, market whispers suggest the Yankees might pivot toward a more seasoned infield presence. While Gavin Lux has already found a new home with the Cincinnati Reds, other notable targets remain in play, including Luis Arraez, Brendan Rodgers, and Jorge Polanco. This pursuit of veteran talent comes as the Yankees seek to address their defensive inconsistencies from the previous season.

Cabrera’s trajectory with the organization may ultimately depend on whether the Yankees prioritize internal talent development or opt to package him in a deal for established talent. Recent reports indicate the utility star has dedicated his offseason to enhancing his switch-hitting abilities. Despite the Yankees’ tendency to utilize him primarily as a left-handed batter, even against southpaws, his potential from the right side could significantly boost his market value.

The growing Cabrera trade buzz

The widespread appeal of Cabrera extends beyond his cost-effective contract and positional flexibility. His proven ability to excel defensively across multiple positions makes him an ideal fit for virtually any roster configuration. Teams lacking infield depth or seeking reliable utility options view Cabrera as a particularly valuable target.

Though his offensive contributions haven’t yet reached their ceiling, Cabrera’s defensive metrics and prospect pedigree—he ranked as the Yankees’ 14th-best prospect in MLB.com’s 2022 rankings—suggest significant untapped potential. Many analysts believe that increased playing time in a new environment could catalyze his offensive development.

Exploring trade possibilities

Should the Yankees decide to field offers for Cabrera, his versatility and team-friendly contract could make him an attractive centerpiece in a larger trade package aimed at securing additional infield talent or pitching depth. His adaptability particularly appeals to both rebuilding teams and contenders looking to strengthen their bench options.

Several teams emerge as logical landing spots for Cabrera. The San Diego Padres, still adjusting to Juan Soto’s departure, might view him as an affordable, multi-dimensional asset. Similarly, organizations like the Cleveland Guardians or Detroit Tigers could leverage Cabrera’s versatility to address multiple roster needs simultaneously.

Weighing internal options

Retaining Cabrera presents clear advantages for the Yankees, particularly if they emphasize player development. His ability to fill multiple roles provides crucial depth during the grueling MLB season, where injuries and matchup considerations frequently necessitate lineup adjustments. His defensive reliability aligns perfectly with the Yankees’ renewed emphasis on fundamental improvement following their defensive struggles in the 2024 postseason.

New York Yankees’ Oswaldo Cabrera celebrates after hitting a home run against the Dodgers on June 9, 2024, in New York.

Conversely, including Cabrera in a trade package could help the Yankees acquire the established talent needed to address immediate roster gaps. The final decision will reflect Cashman’s assessment of how to best balance long-term potential with immediate competitive needs.

Looking ahead

The trade speculation surrounding Oswaldo Cabrera represents a fascinating subplot in the Yankees’ offseason narrative. His unique combination of skills, affordability, and upside has generated significant interest across the league, presenting the Yankees with both opportunity and challenge. Whether they retain him as a key piece of their infield future or leverage his value in a trade, Cabrera’s situation will significantly impact the Yankees’ 2025 campaign.

As the Yankees continue their roster transformation, Cabrera’s future remains uncertain. However, his defensive excellence and unrealized offensive potential ensure he’ll remain a compelling figure to watch in the upcoming season, regardless of which uniform he ultimately wears.
