Yankees Capitalized on Strong Night from Rizzo
Miguel Cabrera seemed to have three hits in the Detroit Tigers’ 5-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday at chilly Comerica Park, moving him one hit shy of 3,000.
Cabrera beat out an infield hit in the second inning, singled middle part against Luis Severino in the fourth, and thereafter grounded a broken-bat single through the shortstop hole off Chad Green in the 6th (1-1).
The announced attendance of 17,268 erupted as quickly as the Yankees made the third out of the 8th. Cabrera struck out on a 1-2 sinker with the fans falling quietly every moment Clay Holmes went into his windup.
His next chance to reach 3,000 will go after Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery on Thursday.
Green (1-1) gave up a two-run double to Harold Castro in the 6th to tie the game at 3-3, but Josh Donaldson stepped against Drew Hutchison (0-1) to start the seventh, and pinch-runner Tim Locastro advanced to third when Gleyber Torres sacrificed and Hutchison passed the ball wildly past second for a mistake. Isiah Kiner-Falefa followed with a liner to center for a 4-3 lead.
Aroldis Chapman decided to pitch around the pinch-hitter Willi Castro’s leadoff single in the 9th for his 3rd save, and DJ LeMahieu hit into a run-scoring forceout in the 8th as Anthony Rizzo beat 1st baseman Spencer Torkelson’s throw home.
On a night that did feel colder than just the match time temperature of 50 degrees, Rizzo hit his 4th home run, doubled, drove in two runs, and managed to steal a base.
Severino pitched five innings, allowing one run and seven hits while having escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth while Castro lined out to shortstop as well as Tucker Barnhart struck out.
In 6 innings, Tigers starter Eduardo Rodriguez allowed three runs and 4 hits.
When Cabrera was thrown out at third on a run-scoring single by Victor Reyes in the second inning, the game was tied. Then Reyes has been caught stealing.
In the third, Aaron Judge hit an RBI double, and Rizzo followed with an RBI groundout. Rizzo’s home run in the sixth inning extended the lead to 3-1.
