The Yankees are unlikely to pursue a trade for Royals All-Star left fielder Andrew Benintendi because he has not been vaccinated, according to Jon Heyman.
Benintendi, 28, is one of ten Royals players who will not travel to Toronto for the start of a 4 game series against the Blue Jays on Thursday. Because of their vaccination status, these players are not permitted to enter Canada.
The Yankees, who traveled to Toronto with a fully vaccinated roster in early May and mid-June, have one more trip to Canada left: a 3 game series against the Blue Jays on September 26-28.
The Yankees lead the AL East by 14 games, while the Blue Jays are tied for the final 2 wild-card spots with the Red Sox and Mariners.
Heyman reports that the Royals previously informed teams interested in Benintendi that he was unvaccinated. The Blue Jays are among the teams still discussing a trade for him, hoping that he will be vaccinated.
This year, Benintendi was performed to his first MLB All-Star Game. He’s on fire. In 87 games, he batted 317 with a.786 OPS, three home runs, and 37 RBIs.
