Last week after losing Michael King to a fractured right elbow, New York Yankees need help to get bullpen. Aaron Boone has replaced him with Marinaccio and Albert Abreu. Even reliever Clarke Schmidt has gotten more work, but the Yankees don’t have anyone like King’s production and efficiency.
If the Yankees want to improve their bullpen, Brian Cashman will need to target a bullpen arm before the trade deadline on Tuesday, but they have one lefty option from Tommy John surgery.
What will Zack Britton bring to the Yankees when he returns?
On September 8, 2021, Zack Britton will undergo Tommy John surgery. He was placed on the injured list for 60 days on March. Britton is preparing for the first time to face live hitters in batting practice.
He’ll most likely start with Somerset and then Scranton before returning to the majors. So far, Britton is progressing well in his rehabilitation, but against live hitters his performance will give us a better idea of his return time.
Zack is a pitcher with a .206 average against, a 23.5 percent WHIFF rate, and a 17.5% put-away rate in 2019. It’s unlikely he’ll be able to replicate those numbers 3 years later after recovering from a serious injury, but the Yankees might be able to get something out of him.
Aaron Boone Yankees Manager believes he can contribute, but we will first wait and see.
