As The Yankees’ Pitching Collapses Late in The Game, The Royals Win The Series Finale
The Kansas City Royals beat the New York Yankees 8-6 on Sunday after Salvador Perez hit a 3-run homer off Clay Holmes.
With one out, Whit Merrifield walked, giving Holmes his eighth walk in his last eight games after issuing only 5 in his first 37 appearances. Bobby Witt Jr. was forced out of the game after being hit in the right hand by a pitch.
Holmes (5-2) blew his third save in 20 chances.
Taylor Clarke (2-1) pitched a perfect eighth inning before giving up DJ LeMahieu‘s single with one out in the ninth. Aaron Judge flew out, Rizzo walked, and Gleyber Torres hit a game-ending lineout.
Judge went 0 for 3 with two walks after finishing the month with a major league-leading 42 home runs and 91 RBI.
New York overcame a 4-0 deficit to take a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning when Anthony Rizzo hit a 3-run homer off Dylan Coleman, his 25th home run of the season.
Hunter Dozier homered off Ron Marinaccio to end his 19-inning scoreless streak and run of 56 batters without allowing a hit.
Over five innings, Royals starter Zack Greinke allowed 3 runs, 5 hits, and 2 walks while striking out 3.
In four and a half innings, Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery allowed four runs, four hits, and two walks while striking out six. He has a 6.27 ERA in his last four starts.
In the fifth, Nick Pratto’s two-run single, Maikel Garcia’s RBI double, and Merrifield’s run-scoring groundout put Kansas City up 4-0.
In the bottom half, Kyle Higashioka had an RBI single and LeMahieu hit a 2-run homer into the right-field.

RHP Domingo Germán (0-1, 8.22 ERA) will make his third start of the season as the Yankees continue their three-game homestand against Seattle.
