Pinch-hitter Rougned Odor Produced the Clutch Hit against His Previous Team
Odor’s two-run single in the eighth inning burst a scoreless tie, and Baltimore ended up going on to a 5-0 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday. Before Odor, Kelvin Gutiérrez, and Jorge Mateo came through in a five-run rally, the Orioles had been 2 for 28 with runners in scoring position in the series and 7 for 83 on the season.
Odor did play for the Yankees last season before being released and signing with Baltimore.
Ryan Mountcastle singled to start the eighth inning for Baltimore, and Trey Mancini walked. Robinson Chirinos managed to draw a 10-pitch walk two outs later to plan and prepare for Odor.
Odor came to the plate as both a pinch hitter with the bases loaded and singled sharply up the middle against Loáisiga (0-1). Mateo added an RBI single after Gutiérrez’s two-run double.
Jorge López (1-1) pitched in relief for Baltimore, which won two of three games against the Yankees, both in the final at-bat.
Nestor Cortes of New York pitched five-plus innings, striking out 12 batters while permitting three hits and a walk. Cortes pitched an outstanding fourth inning, striking out the side on 9 pitches. In the second, he also struck out the side.
Bruce Zimmermann of Baltimore pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six.
With one out in fourth, New York must have runners on first and third, but Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded into a double play.
Tim Locastro recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the game, made a spectacular diving catch in the sixth inning on a ball hit to left center by Mancini.

The Yankees have the day off Monday before heading to Detroit for a three-game series. Gerrit Cole takes the mound for New York against Eduardo Rodriguez on Tuesday night (0-1).
