Before the Major League Baseball season started, there were questions about the Yankees. Regular seasons weren’t as good, and playoff runs were short and frustrating. The team didn’t get much better over the offseason. Fans were upset that the Yankees had changed so much from the George Steinbrenner-era team to one that relies heavily on analytics.
Fans quickly stopped talking. At least until the end of June, the Yankees were on track to win 120 games. They were on track to set new records in the major leagues. It seemed like they were going to coast through the season without any problems and set some records along the way. But over the course of a 162-game season, baseball tends to even things out.
They had 56 victories by June 29th. Its 47 victories were more than any other baseball team. There have been 72 wins for the Yankees as of today. Even though they still have the fourth-best record in baseball, their sudden fall from the top is shocking.
The Yankees led the Astros in the AL by eight games on June 29. The Astros lead by 2.5 games. Houston would have home-field advantage if the playoffs started now. In recent years, the Yankees have struggled at this stadium. Since early in the season, the Yankees are no longer BetMGM’s AL favorites. Houston is the betting favorite with +165 odds.
At the end of June, the Yankees had a better record than the Dodgers by nine games. The Yankees are now nine games behind the Dodgers. That’s a change of 18 games over a little more than a month and a half. Even though the Dodgers didn’t lose, that’s still a crazy turn of events. Even the Mets have beaten their rivals in the same city.
The Yankees have recently struggled. The roster has been depleted with the departures of Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, Matt Carpenter, Luis Severino, Michael King, Chad Green, and Harrison Bader. Anthony Rizzo was out for a week. August, Gleyber Torres batted .157. Clay Holmes was hard to hit for most of the season, but in his last 5 appearances, he has given up 7 runs. Except for Aaron Judge, the Yankees have done poorly.
If you bet every Yankees game in the past month and a half, you’d be down 23 units. The Yankees have lost bettors money this season, which is incomprehensible given their start. The Yankees lost Monday night as a -250 favorite with Gerrit Cole pitching. Cole allowed one run in six innings. Bats froze. If pitching is good, bats aren’t. When bats hit, pitchers get hit. The Yankees are struggling.
Despite this, the Yankees are favorites against the Rays on Tuesday. The Yankees are -165 favorites over Jeffrey Springs and the Rays with Nestor Cortes pitching. Springs has been good this season, and the Yankees have struggled against the Rays. You’d have to love pain to bet on the Yankees on Tuesday.
