New York Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman recently stirred debate with his high praise for teammates Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Stroman, visibly impressed, claimed that the current Yankees duo is superior to the legendary pairing of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
This bold statement has divided fans, with some dismissing it as an exaggeration, while others agree, citing the duo’s recent performances as evidence.
Juan Soto and Nestor Cortes delivered standout performances in the Yankees’ 8-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. The victory, coupled with a Baltimore Orioles loss, propelled the Yankees (74-53) into first place in the American League East.
Comparation between Juan Soto and Aaron Judge vs. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig
In their first season together, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto have quickly established themselves as a formidable duo in the Yankees lineup. Judge has delivered an impressive .324 batting average, 44 home runs, and 111 RBIs, while Soto has contributed with a .302 average, 36 home runs, and 93 RBIs. Their combined efforts have played a key role in the Yankees’ success this season.
This powerful pairing has inevitably drawn comparisons to one of baseball’s most iconic duos: Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Ruth, known as the Sultan of Swat, hit 659 home runs during his time with the Yankees, and Gehrig, the Iron Horse, added 493. Their partnership dominated the 1920s and ’30s, setting a standard for offensive production in the sport.
While it’s early in their partnership, Judge and Soto’s performance has sparked discussions about their potential to join the ranks of Yankees greats. Their combined 275 hits and significant impact on the team’s success have been notable, but the comparison to Ruth and Gehrig remains
Inside the Yankees dugout
During the game, Stroman, in his first season with the Yankees, turned to fellow pitcher Nestor Cortes as they watched Aaron Judge at bat. “Oh, man,” Stroman said. “This guy is incredible.” Cortes, recalling Judge’s record-breaking 2022 season, responded with a smile, “Yeah, man. I watched this all year in 2022.”
Aaron Judge, who hit two home runs on Wednesday, is on pace to reach 60 homers this season, mirroring his historic 2022 performance when he set an American League record with 62 home runs. Yankees manager Aaron Boone lauded Judge’s continuous improvement, calling it a hallmark of greatness.
On the same night, Juan Soto hit his 36th home run, a career-high, and later cleared the bases with a double, helping the Yankees secure a commanding win. Judge and Soto combined for all eight of the Yankees’ runs.
While some fans see Stroman’s comparison as over the top, others believe that Judge and Soto have the potential to achieve legendary status. The debate continues as the Yankees push forward in the race for the postseason.
