The Tampa Bay Rays will call George M. Steinbrenner Field, the New York Yankees’ spring training complex, their home for the 2025 season following Hurricane Milton’s extensive damage to Tropicana Field. The arrangement, confirmed by Spotrac via an Associated Press MLB report, includes a $15 million payment from the Rays to the Yankees for the facility’s use.
The financial terms of the deal quickly became a talking point, particularly given the Rays’ reputation for operating with one of baseball’s lowest payrolls. Tampa-based sports analyst Zac Blobner humorously remarked on the Yankees’ ability to profit from the agreement, while a fan named JayHayKid pointed out that the $15 million rental fee surpasses the salary of any Rays player for 2025.
Adding to the discussion, Baltimore Sun reporter Matt Weyrich highlighted that the facility payment represents the Rays’ largest financial commitment for the season. It outstrips the salaries of the team’s highest-paid players, including Brandon Lowe and Jeffrey Springs ($10.5 million each), Yandy Díaz ($10 million), and Pete Fairbanks ($3.8 million).
Speculation surrounding the Rays’ plans for free-agent acquisitions, such as pursuing star outfielder Juan Soto, has been tempered by the organization’s historical aversion to high-dollar commitments. The temporary relocation to a spring training venue also raises concerns about its impact on player satisfaction and recruitment, potentially complicating efforts to attract top talent for the 2025 season.
