TAMPA, Fl. — The Yankees roster cut on Tuesday has effectively reduced their spring training strength to 51 from 62. However, the most important aspect of the second roster cut is that it eliminated five pitchers.
The most important name that is no more on the Yankees roster is Deivi Garcia. The Yankees’ right-handed pitcher was relaxing at his locker late Tuesday afternoon, a day after having another good spring outing. Pitching coach Matt Blake came over.
Blake looked at Garcia and then waved for him to come toward him. The bad news was shared at a meeting in manager Aaron Boone’s office. As part of the latest Yankees roster cuts, Garcia was sent to the camp for the minor leagues.
In addition, the Yankees reassigned four pitchers Matt Bowman, Demarcus Evans, Ryan Weber, and Tanner Tully to the minor league.
Garcia’s disappointment was expected, but the right-hander made significant strides this spring after two nightmare seasons, with an ERA of 6.85 in Triple-A in 2021 and a 6.89 in Double-A and Triple-A last season.
Garcia went 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in three spring starts, allowing two runs in 7 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and four walks. In a relief appearance against the Twins on Monday, he allowed one run on a solo homer over 3 1/3 innings.
Now, the 23-year-old Dominican needs to do it in real games, just like he did on his way to the big leagues in 2020, which included a start in the postseason.
