As the New York Yankees prepare for the 2025 season, they’re actively searching for bullpen upgrades. The reigning American League champions assembled a formidable bullpen last season, but with key relievers entering free agency, the Yankees are now focused on restocking their bullpen depth. Among their targets is Carlos Estevez, a consistent middle reliever who split the 2024 season between the Los Angeles Angels and the Philadelphia Phillies.

After securing Luke Weaver for 2025 with a $2.5 million option, the Yankees have their closer position in good hands. Weaver, who played a pivotal role in their playoff run, remains a reliable option to close games. However, concerns arise when considering the middle innings, especially with the departures of Clay Holmes, Tommy Kahnle, and Tim Hill, who were central to manager Aaron Boone’s playoff bullpen strategy. Combined, these three contributed 149.2 regular-season innings and were key to stabilizing the bullpen, especially in high-leverage situations.

Carlos Estevez, a former All-Star with the Los Angeles Angels, enjoyed a career-high season in 2024. After being traded to the Phillies in late July, he maintained a stellar performance, posting a 2.45 ERA across 54 appearances, allowing only 38 hits and five home runs in 55 innings. This success builds on his past few seasons, during which Estevez has developed into a highly reliable middle reliever. Since 2022, he’s held a 3.30 ERA over 179 games, marking a significant improvement from his early career with the Colorado Rockies.

Given his consistency and effectiveness, Carlos Estevez would be a valuable addition to the Yankees’ middle-relief unit. His ability to handle both right-handed and left-handed batters effectively offers flexibility, a factor that Boone often prioritizes in late-game situations.

Additionally, since Carlos Estevez doesn’t fill the traditional closer role, his expected market price may be more manageable, making him an appealing target for a Yankees team looking to allocate resources strategically.

Beyond Carlos Estevez, the Yankees are expected to pursue multiple bullpen additions, with other MLB free-agent relievers also under consideration. According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Yankees have shown interest in a variety of free agents to fill their bullpen needs. Estevez’s blend of experience, recent success, and versatility could make him an ideal fit, but he might be just one piece of a larger puzzle as the Yankees look to build a bullpen capable of sustaining another postseason run.

If Carlos Estevez signs with the Yankees, he would join a bullpen already anchored by Luke Weaver in the closing role, providing Boone with a dependable middle-relief option. With the departures of Holmes, Kahnle, and Hill, adding multiple quality arms will be essential to maintain the depth and effectiveness that carried them to the AL Championship.
