According to then-Yankees manager Joe Torre, Roger Clemens went back to the clubhouse and cried after throwing Mike Piazza’s broken bat back toward him during the 2000 World Series.
During Game 2 of the series, the incident was one of the charged situations in Subway Series history. Clemens and Piazza had a previous history, with Clemens hitting the Mets catcher in the head earlier in that season, resulting in a concussion. Piazza had previously homered three times in a row off Clemens.
As a result, there was tension in the air even when Piazza went the plate, and both benches cleared after Clemens threw the bat.
When Clemens was forced to bat in a Subway Series game in 2002, the Mets retaliated by throwing behind his head.
On Monday, Piazza told WFAN that he has no lingering enmity toward Clemens.
