Red Sox Bogaerts scores in 11th to defeat the Yankees 5-4

Another frustrating loss for the Yankees

With two outs in the 11th inning, Xander Bogaerts slid home on Michael King‘s wild pitch, and the Boston Red Sox recovered from a meltdown in the ninth to beat the New York Yankees 5-4, their third win in 11 games.

All three of Boston’s victories have come against the Yankees.

The Red Sox arrived after being swept in a four-game series in Tampa Bay, got home runs from Rafael Devers, Christian Vázquez, and Bobby Dalbec.

New York has lost five of six games, their worst stretch of the season (62-28). Nathan Eovaldi who came back from injury allowed Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer.

In the seventh, Dalbec put the Red Sox ahead 4-3 by a slider from Aroldis Chapman for his 7th home run of the season.

Tanner Houck (5-3) blew a save for the first time in seven chances as New York tied in ninth. Gleyber Torres reached on an infield hit, Matt Carpenter was hit by a pitch, and Torres scored when Houck threw past third on Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s.

Clay Holmes struck out Bogaerts in the 10th inning, and Houck got out of a first-and-third jam in the bottom half when Torres grounded into an inning-ending double play.

In the 11th inning, Alex Verdugo’s leadoff fly to the left-field warning track against King (6-2) advanced Bogaerts. Bogaerts slid home headfirst When King bounced a 1-2 slider for a wild pitch.

Ryan Brasier retired three batters for his first save, ending a four-hour game by getting Aaron Hicks with a strikeout called by third base umpire Jim Reynolds.

Following two losses, the Yankees went 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position as they played their third extra-inning game in a row.

Jordan Montgomery needed 31 pitches to get through the first inning in front of a season-high crowd. Yankees’ fourth home sellout of the season. Devers hit the next pitch and Rob Refsnyder walked leading off.

Montgomery allowed three runs and six hits in 6 innings.

RHP Jameson Taillon (9-2) starts Saturday for the Yankees on five days’ rest and RHP Nick Pivetta (8-6) is on the mound for Boston.
